Position Primary Purpose and General Responsibilities

The Research Scientist will apply complex scientific knowledge to create and carry out experiments proposed in Dr. Zhao Lin’s laboratory. The main focus will be on determining the role of epigenetic regulation in periodontal disease progression and developing novel therapeutics for treating periodontal diseases using in vitro and in vivo models. Specifically, these investigations will include, Lentiviral vector generation and stable cell line production, miRNA analysis, functional analysis of immune cells, drug inhibitor studies, ligature-induced-experimental periodontitis models in rats, microCT analysis. The scientist will assist the manager with the training of students, post-docs, graduate students, and other research personnel regarding appropriate laboratory techniques as related to this research.

Minimum Hiring Standards

– Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Tumor Biology or equivalent training and/or experience

– Have a wide range of molecular biology and biochemistry experience and ability

– Significant hands-on experience of epigenetics, miRNAs and exosomes

– Significant hands-on experience of ligature-induced experimental periodontitis in rats and gingival drug delivery

– Experience in performing gain-of-function and loss-of-function experiments in primary human gingival keratinocytes

– Experience with molecular cloning, exosome purification by ultracentrifugation and assays to evaluated function of osteoblast and osteoclast

– Experience with immunohistochemistry in human tissue samples

– Experience of analyzing alveolar bone using microCT

– Must be self-motivated and reliable

– Able to work both independently and as a part of a team

– Excellent verbal and written communication skills

– Ability to work in a diverse environment

– Experience working with and assisting graduate students and research assistants/technicians

– Must keep meticulous records of experimentation procedure and results both electronically and manually

– Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as an employee at VCU

Preferred Hiring Standards

– Strong hands-on experience on animal studies
