Position Primary Purpose and General Responsibilities

University Student Health Services ( USHS ) attends to the physical health needs of more than 30,000 diverse undergraduate and graduate/professional students on the Monroe Park and Medical campuses by providing high quality primary care services including allergy shots, blood and/or body fluid exposures, immunizations, mental health and ADHD care, nutrition consultations, sexual health and wellness, on-call phone consultation, and travel health care. USHS also houses an on-site pharmacy at its Monroe Park campus clinic and laboratory services on both campuses. USHA is accredited by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care, Inc.

The Director of University Student Health Services, reporting to the Assistant Vice Provost for Student Affairs, provides strategic leadership, vision and direction for student health services. The director works closely with professional and allied health schools on the Medical campus. The Director of University Student Health Services manages the day-to-day operations of the campus health center working in close collaboration with internal and external departments including but not limited to athletics/athletic trainers; the campus wellness program; university counseling services, residential life and housing, and local and regional health care providers and institutions. The director prepares and maintains detailed and comprehensive reports, ensures patient record compliance, develops programs as appropriate, oversees accreditation, maintains budgetary authority and oversight, maintains all compliance reporting including state immunization reports, supervises a diverse professional staff, leads quality improvement initiatives, manages crises as needed, maintains health care risk management, and performs other duties as assigned. The director serves as the chief student health expert for the university and coordinates the campus public health response team. The director is an active member of the Division of Student Affairs leadership team ( SALT ).

Minimum Hiring Standards

Advanced degree in a relevant field (medicine, healthcare administration, public health, or other related field)
If the advanced degree is an MD or DO, Board certification or Board eligibility in primary care with a DEA and BLS certificate
License to practice Medicine in the State of Virginia (if applicable)
A thorough understanding and knowledge of clinical practices and health care administration
Proven success in a management/leadership role
Demonstrated success in recruiting, selecting, training, mentoring, and evaluating diverse staff members
Clear understanding of the direction and future of health services
An awareness and understanding of health care issues that impact diverse populations
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills including
Experience using electronic health records
Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU

Preferred Hiring Standards

At least five years of experience in health care administration, most notably college health administration
Experience directing the operations of a student health organization in a college or university environment
Knowledge and experience in the oversight of clinical services, pharmacy, laboratory, general health exams, vaccinations, psychiatric care and other primary care services
Experience efficiently managing fiscal, human resources, and risk management issues
Strategic planning, budgeting, and financial management experience
A high level of cultural competence in working with diverse populations
Involvement in professional organizations at the regional or national level

Required Licenses/ Certifications
