JOB SUMMARY

 

The Director of Inclusion and Multicultural Engagement leads the daily operations of the department, and works in collaboration with Student Life leadership to advance a strategic vision and implement programs and activities that enhance campus inquiry and engagement with issues of diversity, identity, culture and social justice. In addition, the Director supports the College’s retention efforts by leading programs that assist underrepresented students in attaining college success. The Director serves as a member of the Division of Student Life Leadership Team, and supports the mission and vision of the Division as well as provides leadership in Divisional objectives and goals.

 

The Director is responsible for the design, implementation and assessment of equity and diversity education curricula and skill development; purposeful and structured outreach and engagement of recognized cultural student organizations; programs and services that positively impact campus climate for underrepresented and marginalized student populations; and activities and experiences that support the development of both human and financial resources within the department.

 

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Student Life Divisional Responsibilities (15%)

  • Create and maintain the strategic plan for the Office of IME in direct support of the overall strategic direction of the Division of Student Life.

  • Represent the VPSL on appointed committees. Serve as a member of the Student Life on Call (SLOC) rotating senior administrator duty and other committee work.

  • Actively participate in the Student Life Leadership Team and select divisional projects and initiatives.

  • Provide leadership to Division of Student Life efforts related to multicultural learning, understanding, communication and continued improvement of a welcoming institutional climate.

 

Campus Outreach and Engagement (40%)

  • Serve as a member of the Division of Student Life Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee to develop cultural competency training efforts for the Division of Student Life staff members, student leaders, and student employees. Design intercultural programs that are introduced to all first-year students and integrated into residential programming.

  • Oversee IME signature events that occur during New Student Orientation, WOKEshops, Great Expectations, commemoration, celebration months, banquets and receptions.

  • Partner with campus leaders to create an environment that meaningfully and thoughtfully fosters a diverse learning and living environment on campus, and prepares students to live in a diverse world.

  • Serve as a resource for the College on best practices, national trends, and campus community needs in the areas of identity development, access and inclusion, intercultural issues, diversity and social justice. Identify education topics relevant to staff training and peer education models.

  • Balance the expectation of advocacy for underrepresented and marginalized students with providing leadership and administrative oversight of emergent and emergency response, provides alerts and emerging trends of underrepresented groups and suggests ways to support and address issues to the appropriate administrator.

  • Provide collaborative leadership with students, faculty and staff supporting multicultural programming and diversity training, work closely with other departments and offices to support synergy of efforts.

 

Training and Program Development (30%)

  • Lead the team in shared understanding of mission, vision, signature efforts and service delivery of the office.

  • Lead a small team to coordinate programs that support the institutional retention efforts with historically marginalized or underrepresented student communities and allied students and organizations.

  • Actively lead the IME team to develop supportive, mentoring relationships for individual students, meeting regularly with leaders of multicultural student organizations to provide support, leadership development and opportunities, and training and programming assistance.

  • Establish and maintain relationships and partnerships with faculty, alumni, community partners, and other stakeholders involved in engaging and supporting programs for students from underrepresented groups.

  • Ability to honor and work with all identities and individuals, particularly those who are underrepresented in the country and/or Lewis & Clark College.

 

Operational Administration (15%)

  • Supervise a professional staff, graduate students, and student staff and peer educators.

  • Responsible for the selection, training, supervision, evaluation, performance management, and discipline (if necessary).

  • Provide leadership and strategic direction for department with a focus on the College's culture, mission and vision.

  • Encourage and build mutual trust, respect, and cooperation among employees.

  • Establish long-range objectives and specify the strategies and actions to achieve them.

  • Build and work with diverse teams effectively.

  • Manage and administer the budget for the office and ensure the responsible planning and application of departmental and institutional resources.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Masters Degree in College Student Personnel, Higher Education, Leadership, Counseling or related field.

  • Three or more years of progressive leadership experience in a college setting and experience working collaboratively with other administrators, faculty and staff to advance institutional goals.

  • Experience with both domestic and international students in a higher education setting.

  • Strong assessment skills, especially regarding diversity and social justice education.

  • Ability to advise students, individually and in groups.

  • Strong programming skills, especially in regards to creating and executing the delivery of culturally-appropriate, culturally supportive student programming and events; a contemporary understanding of program planning, evaluation, and marketing.

  • Experience in training and developing student leaders.

  • Strong interpersonal, organizational and conflict management skills.

  • Willingness to work flexible hours and evenings as needed.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • At least five years experience in student affairs position(s), including experience working effectively with multicultural and underrepresented student populations, including racial minority students, in support of their academic and social success.

  • Demonstrated leadership via workshops, presentations, and/or committee involvement with diversity or higher education nationally organizations such as NCORE, NASPA, others.

  • Had full time professional staff experience in a designated multicultural center/office.

  • Experience with direct supervision of professional, full-time staff.

  • Understanding of and/or experience in a residential, liberal arts college environment.

  • Knowledge and experience with student retention models.

  • Experience with serving in an on-call capacity.
