Conductor, Columbia University Wind Ensemble

The Columbia University Wind Ensemble (CUWE), a long-serving musical ensemble of undergraduate and graduate students at Columbia University in the City of New York, seeks a conductor for the 2021-2022 academic year.

In recent years, the Wind Ensemble organization has grown its membership, commissioned new works for the wind band repertoire by diverse composers, returned twice by invitation for full-length performances at Carnegie Hall for its first appearances since 1965, featured the work of student composers and student conductors, sponsored a graduate conductor mentorship program with the graduate program at Teachers College, and developed and implemented the Columbia University Honor Band Festival and Columbia Festival of Winds. For the last decade, the Columbia Festival of Winds has raised funds and support for a New York City 501(c)(3) charity that provides music lessons and mentoring to New York City musicians. In addition to leading several commissions of new wind band music, the CUWE has been part of several consortia for new works for the wind band medium and has sponsored multiple visiting composer and conductor residencies.

The successful candidate will be a music educator and conductor who possesses the ability to work collaboratively with a student board, shares the values, beliefs, mores, and traditions of this student-run organization, shares a commitment to diversity, inclusion, and equity in music education, and shares a commitment to lifelong learning through music-making while continuing the CUWE’s mission to engage in student recruitment and alumni organization relations. The successful candidate will be responsible for repertoire development, identifying new and promising works by diverse composers, and continuing successful efforts to engage the community of Morningside Heights and the Upper West Side through the annual Columbia Festival of Winds and Columbia University Honor Band.

Qualifications:  A Master of Arts or Master of Music in Music Education or Conducting (ABD or Doctorate desirable), at least one degree in Music Education by July 1, 2021; a minimum of four years successful experience as a Band Director and demonstrated record of success in instrumental ensemble conducting; a commitment to building professional relationships with area K-12 Band Directors; strategically recruiting students from the Columbia, Barnard, and Teachers College community; developing relationships with alumni; and strong communication, organizational, empathy, and interpersonal skills.

Start date: September 1, 2021.  Some transitional recruitment and audition planning will be expected during the Summer 2021 intercession.

Compensation for this part-time position is remunerated via Student Activities and the Columbia Band Alumni Association and is commensurate with experience. The Columbia University Wind Ensemble rehearses Monday evenings in Lerner Hall on Columbia University’s Morningside Heights campus.  The position is a part-time, non-tenure track, annually renewable position funded jointly by the Columbia University Student Activities Board and the Columbia Band Alumni Association.
