Johnson C. Smith University (JCSU), located in the center of Charlotte, North Carolina, seeks a seasoned, innovative leader to serve as the university’s senior vice president for finance and administration. JCSU is a liberal arts institution with proud HBCU traditions and has a future aimed at becoming a premier professional liberal arts HBCU, providing students with high-quality academic, professional and personal learning experiences that lead to top career outcomes.

JCSU is serving approximately 1,300 students across 23 degree-seeking programs. In addition to being ranked the #1 private HBCU in North Carolina by U.S. News & World Report, JCSU has a national reputation for integrating the liberal arts with business, the sciences and technology in innovative, socially conscious ways, empowering tomorrow’s diverse entrepreneurial citizens and leaders.

President Clarence D. Armbrister has set forth a bold agenda to capitalize on JCSU’s standing as the only HBCU in the Charlotte area. JCSU boasts strong community relationships and strategic partnerships with businesses, corporations and professional groups—partnerships that bolster the university’s emphasis on experiential learning, including internships and summer employment opportunities, in order to best prepare students for the world after graduation. JCSU plays an active role in the community, serving as a catalyst for building and sustaining assets and resources in surrounding neighborhoods and throughout the city of Charlotte. The university is also in the midst of a targeted internal campaign to focus on the “four Rs”—resources, recruitment, retention and rigor—including a goal to increase its endowment to $100 million (up from $66.5 million in fall 2020).

The senior vice president for finance and administration (SVPFA) will serve as JCSU’s chief financial officer and provides executive-level leadership to the university in the planning and management of core operating functions, including public safety, facilities, and auxiliary services. The SVPFA reports directly to the president, serves as a key member of his leadership team and provides advice and counsel on all administrative, business and financial matters affecting the institution. Additional information about the position, including a leadership profile can be found at www.wittkieffer.com.

President Armbrister is searching for a strategic thought partner, one ready to bring new ideas and fresh insight to the financial and administrative workings of the university. The SVPFA must be a highly motivated and entrepreneurial financial leader with the vision, experience and management capabilities necessary to advance and strengthen the university’s financial and administrative standing. The ideal candidate will possess a proven record as a strategist with direct oversight of a variety of administrative functions, particularly finances and facilities, at a similarly complex organization. The SVPFA will set high expectations for performance and accountability and work collaboratively and transparently with colleagues in a spirit of partnership and fiscal responsibility. The SVPFA will be an advocate for best practices that promote inclusive decision-making and mutual respect, creating an environment of trust and a sense of community across the institution.

Application materials should be submitted using WittKieffer’s candidate portal.
