Overview

The Assistant Vice President will support and manage a range of projects related to strategic initiatives, advancement, writing, research, the Board of Trustees, or other purposes. The position, which reports to the Vice President and Secretary of the University, presents an opportunity for a creative, hard-working individual to serve as a key deputy on efforts that require the attention of the Vice President and Secretary and the President.

This role is ideally suited to a proactive and energetic individual with interests and talents in writing, editing, strategic planning, problem-solving, project management, and higher education administration.



Responsibilities
The mix of duties will vary depending on the agenda of the Vice President and Secretary and the President, but will generally include:

  • staffing and/or supporting high-level administrative and trustee committees, including but not limited to the Council of the Princeton University Committee on Naming, the Faculty Advisory Committee on Diversity, and the Trustee Committee on Honorary Degrees

  • monitoring, facilitating, assisting and, when necessary, accelerating planning processes related to the University's highest priorities

  • helping to write, develop, and refine proposals connected to the University's highest priorities

  • conducting research or assembling material in connection with speaking engagements, events, strategic initiatives, or other activities

  • drafting correspondence and memoranda related to key University initiatives

  • assisting with a range of trustee-related communications and projects in partnership with the Vice President and Secretary, the Associate Secretary, and colleagues within and beyond the Office of the President

  • assisting with the preparation of addresses, introductions, letters, and other written material at the highest level of quality -- a process that includes research, rigorous fact-checking, writing, editing and consultation with a wide range of offices and individuals both inside and outside the University

  • advising and assisting in planning and drafting the President's Pages in the Princeton Alumni Weekly and managing the publication process.

  • managing deadlines and project flow for office communications, including setting internal deadlines as necessary, to ensure appropriate time is allocated for writing, editing and review in advance of publication/distribution

  • providing high-level support to colleagues and offices across campus to help prepare and/or review written material relating to the president, e.g., letters, draft remarks, or presidential quotes

  • attending on-campus events where the president or vice president and secretary are speaking, providing staffing support as needed

  • ensuring the accuracy of all facts and details in speeches, statements and quotes

  • working discretely on sensitive or delicate assignments, exercising sound editorial judgment and maintaining the trust and confidence of senior leadership

  • handling other projects as necessary

Required skills and attributes include:

  • Outstanding written and oral communication abilities, including the ability to draft memoranda, letters, and proposals quickly and effectively

  • Bachelor's degree and a minimum of 5 years of related experience

  • Ability and desire to engage in an iterative, fast-paced, collaborative process, responding to and offering revisions and advice rapidly and effectively

  • The ability to collaborate effectively and respectfully with a wide variety of academic and administrative partners in the university

  • Demonstrated aptitude for understanding complex issues and the ability to translate and simplify them for key audiences

  • Clear understanding of, and high regard for, the academic and ethical values of Princeton University

  • The capacity both to carry out projects individually when necessary and to cooperate with or manage teams of partners when appropriate

  • High level of integrity, trustworthiness, and respect

  • Flexibility and adaptability, including a willingness to undertake both mundane and high-profile tasks with enthusiasm and energy

  • Strong research skills and a demonstrated ability to attend carefully to both grammatical and factual details

  • Exceptional organizational skills and proven ability to keep track of and meet numerous deadlines; ability to handle multiple tasks in a timely manner and effectively reprioritize responsibilities

  • High level of discretion and excellent judgment; ability to work with and manage confidential information
