Colby is seeking highly qualified candidates for the position of assistant/associate director for community values, conflict resolution, and restorative practice. This position has been created as part of the Dean of the College Division’s newly restructured office which is designed to ensure a more collaborative, equitable, streamlined, community-based response to prevention, education, individual and collective accountability, and conflict resolution on Colby’s campus.

Reporting to the assistant dean of students and director of the Office of Community Values, Conflict Resolution, and Restorative Practice, the assistant/associate director will oversee the overall day-to-day management of student conduct reports, including incident and complaint reviews, intakes, investigations, and resolutions of allegations violations of the Student Code of Conduct. The successful candidate will manage a process that is fundamentally fair, impartial, and primarily restorative and educational; advise and train students as board members in conduct hearings and serve as the hearing officer in formal resolution cases. It is essential to this function to ensure students’ rights under the process are equitable. The assistant/associate director is expected to maintain accurate records of cases in the database, clarify community behavioral expectations, and share conduct outcome reports on a regular basis. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

  • Serve as an important team member of the Dean of Student’s staff providing general student support, advising and guiding students, and communicating with faculty and parents
  • Serve as a member of the Academic Integrity team
  • Assist in the management of the On-Call system including training of on-call staff and engage with stakeholders to develop long term prevention and education strategies; serve on the on-call rotation and as back up as needed
  • Review student behavior trends weekly with the director of residential education and director of security; assist in the development of campus policy and with plans to support campus events
  • Provide regular updates on student conduct to the director and the dean of students
  • Meet regularly with the Office of Campus Life, hall staff, and the restorative practice team. prepare report templates that collect data on usage and qualitative experiences of participants
  • Review and refine alternative resolution processes
  • Interpret and articulate Code of Student Conduct, and other related policies for members of the campus community; review and make recommendations for revisions to the director and other campus administrators
  • Work with campus stakeholders to design outcomes and educational sanctioning programming that are rooted in restorative practices and the repair of interpersonal and community harm
  • Assist students in the navigation of College’s resolution process, and procedures, ensuring they understand their rights, available resources, and resolution options
  • Exercise judgment regarding the resolution of complaints utilizing a spectrum of conflict resolution approaches/practices, which may include dialogue, conflict coaching, facilitated dialogue, mediation, restorative practices, and informal or formal adjudication consistent with the values of accountability and community-building
  • Under the guidance of the director, conduct prompt, fair, equitable, and impartial administrative investigations into complaints including identifying and interviewing parties and identifying, gathering, and assessing information relevant to the investigation; apply relevant policies and making findings of fact where appropriate
  • Facilitate and manage the formal hearing adjudication process
  • Utilize the Maxient student conduct database to document and process conduct cases, track conduct sanctions to ensure completion, and provide regular statistical and/or other custom analytic reports
  • Actively foster and maintain a climate that is supportive of students and respectful of difference
  • Assist with campus wide programs to educate on processes related to the student accountability process and the Student Code of Conduct
  • Develop and facilitate training/presentations to students and student organizations regarding College policies
  • Assist with training on all facets of the student conduct process to essential stakeholders, including faculty, staff, and students, in collaboration with residential education and campus security
  • Develop and maintain relationships and clear lines of communication with campus and community partners
  • Continuously identify and integrate best practices in the field of student conduct and restorative practices; stay abreast of current developments in the field of student conduct and restorative practices

QUALIFICATIONS :

  • Bachelor’s degree or the equivalent in education and experience; Master’s degree preferred
  • Minimum 3 years of relevant experience required; student conduct administration and higher education experience preferred
  • Proven expertise in providing counsel to students
  • Demonstrated experience, knowledge and skills in various conflict resolution practices; experience or interest in non-traditional and alternative dispute strategies for resolution of conflict preferred
  • Experience working within a diverse setting with faculty, student affairs staff, students and family members
  • Expertise in problem solving and referral skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and demonstrated problem-solving and dispute resolution; mediation skills are a plus
  • Strong analytical ability, sound judgment, and the ability to handle difficult situations with sensitivity and objectivity
  • Must have knowledge of student life issues that affect student success, such as, mental health, disabilities, sexual harassment and assault, alcohol and drug abuse, and eating disorders
  • Ability to work collaboratively and effectively with multiple constituencies, including students, faculty, parents, alumni, and other campus colleagues
  • Excellent organizational and management skills; ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities and adjust as necessary
  • Demonstrated computer and technological skills
  • Skill in negotiating positive outcomes and creative solutions to problems, while upholding College policies
  • Track record of success with programming and presentation skills
  • Attention to accuracy and details without losing sight of the big picture

This position interacts with students, faculty, staff, families, and outside constituencies. The successful candidate will have a strong record of establishing effective working relationships with administrators, faculty, staff, students, parents, and external constituents.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS :

General open office and campus environment. Position involves sitting, although frequent movement is necessary. Computer usage involving repetitive hand/wrist motion is also necessary. Evening and weekend hours are required.
