The Office of Academic and Career Advising within the College of Visual and Performing Arts ( VPA ) is currently seeking a career advisor to deliver services to students enrolled in its various majors. The career advisor is responsible for advising, training and coaching students, as well as supporting special events and gathering pertinent student data. This individual will collaborate with schools and departments within VPA and across the University, as well as with alumni and employer partners locally and nationally.

Anticipation of a Fall Semester start date for this position (late August to early September 2021).


• Bachelor’s degree and at least three (3) years of relevant experience in a university or a professional setting.

Job Specific Qualifications

• Experience in college career services or related environment. Experience working with diverse populations.

• A demonstrated ability to work within a team as well as independently.

• Ability to work collaboratively; demonstrated willingness to take initiative and aptitude to work independently.

• Good organizational skills and ability to effectively plan, coordinate, and oversee events.

• Skilled in use of online career resources, networking platforms, career center management system and other online resources.

• Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build and maintain professional relationships with students, alumni, employers, colleagues, faculty, and staff. Must have excellent written, verbal, and oral communication skills.

• Technical/computer skills needed include (but not limited to): experience using Microsoft Office Suite, electronic communications, databases, and career services related software/platforms.

• Strong attention to detail and time management skills are required.

• Familiarity with utilizing social media for networking and/or entrepreneurial branding preferred. Understanding of the gig economy a plus.


• Provide counseling, advising, and/or coaching to students for: career exploration, experiential learning, internship searches, mentoring opportunities, resume/application material critiques, job search strategies, networking tips, interview preparation, graduate school preparation and self-branding/entrepreneurial guidance.

• Work collaboratively with the academic advising team to enhance the student experience through collaborative programming such as workshops and events that support student’s academic, personal, and professional development. Engage students regularly throughout the student lifecycle.

• Stay current on knowledge of special population needs and relevant industry trends, (e.g. international students’ requirements for internships, pertinent career options related to VPA majors).

• Attending training workshops on relevant student needs and issues.

• Develop and/or facilitate career services workshops on skill development, exploration of relevant career opportunities, and prepare students for job fairs and other recruiting events.

• Conduct research to identify employers of interest to students, providing counseling for effective employer outreach, and guide students in preparation for interviews, meetings, and company visits.

• Track knowledge metrics on career related outcomes, such as student appointment numbers, career education engagement numbers, internships, and placement into career and graduate school. Collect these data points utilizing the university wide shared career technology software. Report metrics to supervisor and to central career office as requested.

• Develop relationships, create partnerships, and collaborate with career services staff across the University and central career office, departments/schools, faculty, and other key stakeholders to offer career planning opportunities to engage VPA students.
