Job Summary

Reporting to the Assistant Parking Manager and receiving work lead direction from the Lead Parking Enforcement Officer, the Parking Enforcement Officer performs duties such as parking and safety coordination for campus special events, parking enforcement, and provides training for parking enforcement officers and student assistants in the department of Parking Services. Working independently under general supervision, the Parking Enforcement Officer supports the mission of the University Police Department and takes an active role in the development and implementation of policies and procedures associated with Parking Services.

Key Responsibilities

  • Proactively patrol campus parking lots to enforce parking rules and regulations through education, verbal/written warnings, and the issuance of citations
  • Issue citations for parking and other standing violations, as appropriate
  • Appear in court for parking-related citations
  • Assist in the placement of traffic control devices to facilitate traffic flow
  • Patrol the parking lots and garages on foot or in a vehicle to protect the campus community and visitors from hazards such as fire, theft, vandalism, trespassing, and other crimes. Report hazardous conditions and suspicious activity
  • Check, open, and close campus facilities as required
  • Respond to blue light telephone calls in and around parking facilities
  • Direct emergency vehicles and personnel; direct vehicular and pedestrian traffic around incidents controlled by the police
  • Provide motorist assistance such as vehicle unlocks, jumpstarts, and tire changes
  • Provide information and directions to faculty, staff, students, and university visitors
  • Direct vehicular and pedestrian traffic during peak demand special events and emergencies
  • Assists in training new parking student assistants
  • Assists in training new parking enforcement staff


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Working knowledge of applicable procedures and regulations related to parking and traffic control
  • Thorough knowledge of campus layout and parking facilities
  • Ability to act and resolve parking and traffic problems
  • Working knowledge of parking-related equipment
  • Ability to write standard parking incident reports in a clear and concise manner
  • Working knowledge of applicable radio systems
  • Ability to observe and recall details and incidents, as well as detect and respond appropriately to potentially hazardous situations
  • Ability to effectively interact with a wide range of individuals including the campus community and the general public
  • Ability to appropriately handle parking monies received
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to handle sensitive situations with tact and confidentiality
  • Ability to prioritize calls for service and respond appropriately
  • Ability to perform in a high-stress environment
  • Excellent customer service and public relation skills


Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Three to six months related experience would normally achieve these entry qualifications. Requires the possession of a valid California Driver's License for the operation of any vehicle or equipment required for position and in any emergency situation.


License

A valid driver's license is required for this position. Out of state candidates selected for the position must obtain a State of California driver's license within 10 days of hire in accordance with the California Department of Motor Vehicles regulations.

Once hired the employee must successfully complete the Defensive Driver Training Program provided by the State of California for California State University campuses.

Preferred Qualifications

  • One year of experience in a field involving heavy public contact and independent decision making
  • Prior military or law enforcement training work experience or relevant college course work




Compensation

Classification: Parking Officer I
Anticipated Hiring Range: $3,551/month - $3,867/month
Salary Range: $2,912/month - $4,501/month
