Mission or Goal of Unit

The primary mission of the School of Dentistry is to educate practitioners of Dentistry capable of meeting the general oral health needs of the communities they serve. Integral parts of the mission are research and other scholarly activity, patient care, and leadership in dental education and organized dentistry, and collaboration and participation with other units with VCU and VCU Health Systems.

Chief purpose of this position in support of above mission or goal

The School of Dentistry invites candidates to apply for the Chair of Endodontics and Oral Diagnostic Sciences faculty position, who will examine the operations of the department as a whole and the relationship to their institution and patients. In this role, they will help faculty within the department be realistic about their expectations for balancing research, teaching and patient care. The Chair will provide leadership for the educational, scholarship, patient care, and service mission of the department and the School of Dentistry. Additionally, they will collaborate and participate with other units with VCU and VCU Health Systems to provide outstanding patient care and continuing education for VCU Dental students.

Position Responsibilities

Administrative:
Serve as Department Chair for the Department of Endodontics and Oral Diagnostic Sciences in the School of Dentistry. The chair will provide leadership and management of the department faculty and staff to include annual review and evaluation, mentoring for development and promotion and/or tenure review. They will also participate in fundraising for the department in conjunction with the Associate Dean for Development and Alumni Relations.

Teaching:
Faculty members are expected to teach in an integrated curriculum system that includes baccalaureate, graduate, and professional education. Teaching across traditional departmental lines and in multidisciplinary teams is required. The faculty member is expected to foster transformative learning that is informed by interdisciplinary and translational research, teaching, scholarship, and creative expression. They will provide clinical and classroom teaching and supervision in both the predoctoral and postdoctoral clinics. They will assist in the preparation of postdoctoral dental students for specialty board examination. They will supervise and mentor residents in research related to their postdoctoral program and foster and participate in interdisciplinary educational programs involving the different departments within the School of Dentistry.

Faculty members must demonstrate the ability to contribute to and participate in a humanistic environment of learning, as well as to adapt to change and embrace modern technologies. Faculty members must demonstrate the ability, or acquire and develop such ability, to incorporate adult learning theory, evidence-based oral health care, innovation in student learning, and critical thinking.

Research:
Research and scholarship is an expectation for all members of the School of Dentistry faculty as appropriate for their overall responsibilities and expertise. The Chair is expected to support and participate in research and scholarship of students and residents and the faculty and to have a personal research focus appropriate for the rank of associate professor or full professor.

Service:
The chair will be expected to represent the Department, the School of Dentistry, and Virginia Commonwealth University by serving on committees and task forces as requested. Participation in state and national level professional organizations as appropriate for the position and candidate’s expertise is required. Participation and/or support of the department’s participation in dentistry-related community service activities is required.

Clinical:
Will provide teaching and leadership role in dentistry clinics, seeing patients, working with students, and working collaboratively with other faculty and staff to promote best business practices, and increase clinic productivity. Participation in the Faculty Private Practice is encouraged.

Required Qualifications

• Applicant must have DDS or DMD degree and be eligible for licensure in Virginia

• Certificate of completion of Advanced Education in Endodontics or Oral Diagnostic Sciences Specialty Program

• Board Certified in specialty

• Strong record of scholarly achievement, research and publications

• Experience in dental education, resident program administration, or other leadership experience

• Must have the desire to mentor future dental practitioners and must demonstrate the ability and desire to incorporate adult learning theory, evidence-based oral health care, innovation in student learning, and critical thinking

• Must demonstrate the ability to contribute to and participate in a humanistic environment of learning and discovery. Faculty must demonstrate the ability to adapt to change and embrace modern technologies

• Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU

Preferred Qualifications

• Fundraising experience

• National service in organized dentistry

• Master’s degree or PhD

• Private practice experience

• Prior experience teaching within a predoctoral curriculum (didactic and clinical)
