    Department Summary
    The UO Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry offers undergraduate major and minor degrees in chemistry and biochemistry, and graduate degrees at the masters and PhD level. A unique strength of our program is its interdisciplinary approach to research and teaching. Chemical scientists may be interested in the Institute of Molecular Biology, the Institute of Theoretical Science, the Materials Science Institute, the Oregon Center for Optics, and the programs in cell biology and in molecular synthesis, structure, and dynamics.

    Position Summary
    The Chemistry Teaching Labs Coordinator supports the educational mission of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry by managing detailed activities associated with the physical preparation of all teaching laboratory courses offered by the department. This position prepares a large variety of experiments for each laboratory course each day and responds to faculty and student needs for solutions, supplies, apparatus, and instrumentation as they arise during each laboratory session.

    Additional responsibilities include identifying and assessing chemical hazards, risks, and exposure, minimizing personal exposure to unsafe environments, and providing for the safe collection, labeling, disposal, and transfer of hazardous wastes. This position works with the Department Head and Administrative Director to develop and manage a budget for the chemistry teaching labs program, and also facilitates and participates in the grant proposal process.

    The Chemistry Teaching Labs Coordinator supervises multiple chemistry laboratory preparators and also hires and supervises the daily activities of student employees.

    Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in chemistry or related field
  • One year of supervisory/leadership experience

  • Advanced skills in organization, especially in dynamic environments
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills and a demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, with a diverse population
  • Demonstrated knowledge of fiduciary controls, cost reporting, and analysis
  • Demonstrated knowledge of laboratory safety regulations and compliance, environmental hazards, safety audits, risk assessments, accident investigations, and emergency action plans
  • Familiarity with equipment and instrument maintenance, repairs, and replacement
  • Familiarity with inventorying equipment, chemicals, radioactive sources, and keeping pertinent equipment maintenance and inspection logs
  • Proficiency with basic computer software such as Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Familiarity with both Macintosh and Windows operating systems
  • Theoretical and working knowledge of the use of balances, stirrers, pH meters, regulators, volt-meters, spectrophotometers, GCs, FTIRs, and other laboratory equipment
  • Ability to learn new skills quickly and adapt well to changes
  • Ability to assess situations independently and determine what steps are required

    Preferred Qualifications
  • Five or more years of supervisory experience
  • Experience in an industrial laboratory
