About the Position:
The Facilities Management Department is committed to planning, developing, and maintaining a safe, sustainable, and high quality learning and working environment for the campus community. Facilities Management provides oversight of university resources and assets and is responsible for the development of the University's facilities including land use planning, capital improvement, project development, construction, as well as facilities operations and maintenance including custodial services, landscape services, building trade services, mechanical and electrical, and recycling services. We are seeking an exceptional individual to join our team as the Supervising Carpenter. The ideal candidate in this role should have a positive attitude and an active, energetic mind that is characterized by highly ethical practices and a commitment to diversity, openness, flexibility, integrity, and kindness.

Under the supervision of the Building Trades Manager, the Supervising Carpenter supervises a small crew of journey-level trades personnel in the performance of carpentry maintenance, repair and project work. This position supervises and coordinates the execution of planned construction or major maintenance projects. Oversees the design and installation of equipment and system for new construction, modifications, PM service, maintenance and repairs, including planning, coordination, need assessment, reviews, monitoring work and inspections. Prioritizes the work, assigns work orders, and schedules work and projects. Maintains operational integration with maintenance management systems. Develops and maintains work and equipment records, standards, and reports. Provides training of shop staff, including technical and safety related training. Performs construction and maintenance tasks which require the skill level of a journey level carpenter. This includes cabinet making, installation of door and window jambs, and the fabrications and installation of various building systems required for renovation and new construction. Other duties as assigned.


Essential Qualifications:
Previous experience equal to two years as a journey-lead carpenter.
Possess a thorough knowledge of effective supervisory practices and techniques and a working knowledge of job design and work sequencing related to construction projects. Able to plan and direct the work of skilled crafts workers and their semi-skilled assistants; determine and coordinate staffing, material and equipment needs for multiple jobs and projects; and ensure accuracy and maintenance of assigned record-keeping systems. Ability to use a computer to complete work assignments. Ability to communicate effectively in English to a wide variety of people; excellent customer service skill.

A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily and is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.


Preferred Qualifications:
Experience supervising a wide variety of skilled trades employees involved in the building trades. Knowledge of building codes and related regulatory requirements. Broad knowledge of construction methods and techniques.

Will carry master keys. Works on pitched and flat roofs. Works at heights using aerial lifts or other assisted equipment, such as scaffolding, etc. Wears a respirator. Requires journey level carpentry skills. Must be willing and medically capable of working in an asbestos environment.
