Reporting to the Chief Advancement Officer, the Director of Communications serves on the school-wide administrative team and is responsible for generating and overseeing a comprehensive marketing and communications program designed to ensure that the School’s internal and external constituencies remain engaged and informed. 

 

Working with the Head of School, Director of Publications, Director of Graphic Design, Director of Social Media, Website Manager, Development & Alumnae Relations team and colleagues in Admission and throughout the School, the Director of Communications will seek to advance Brearley’s profile, leading and coordinating strategic communications, including print, digital, web, video and social media. 

 

Balancing the ability to create and implement a sustained communications strategy with the capacity to respond effectively to unexpected events, the Director of Communications will work closely with the Head of School on crisis management and public relations, keeping the school community informed with clear and timely updates, as appropriate.

Expertise and Competencies

 

  • Experience creating a messaging and marketing strategy that aligns with institutional culture, and the ability to manage and coach colleagues in implementation across communications channels, over time.
  • The cultural competence and interpersonal skills needed to communicate effectively with diverse audiences that include a range of perspectives across varied constituencies—parents, alumnae, faculty, staff, grandparents, past parents, retirees, prospective families, neighborhood residents and the press.
  • Skillful writer and editor, with strong capacity to identify stories in service to overarching communications strategy and institutional narrative, along with visual competency in print and digital design and effective use of photography, graphics and video.
  • Ability to maintain strong partnerships with leadership teams across the School, including Assistant School Heads, Division leaders, Office of Equity and Community Engagement, Technology, Admission and Development & Alumnae Relations.
  • Expertise in public relations, working with the press and outside consultants.
  • Skilled at creating effective processes with an openness to innovation.
  • Fluent in social media, an interest in new technologies, and ongoing analysis of best practices including at peer institutions.
  • Experience with collection and strategic use of internal and external audience research.
  • Deadline driven, with excellent organizational skills, including facility in accurately estimating time needed to complete a job or project.

 

Specific Responsibilities

 

  • Develop messaging strategy and lead collaborative implementation.
  • Oversee digital and print communications: including website, social media, alumnae and parent newsletters, magazine, and fundraising and admission marketing materials.
  • Manage direct reports, Director of Publications, Director of Graphic Design, Director of Social Media (who also serves as Associate Director of Admission and reports jointly to the Office of Admission), and Website and Administrative Systems Manager (who reports jointly to the Director of Technology).
  • Collaborate with the Parents’ Association on communications, including weekly updates and bimonthly newsletters.
  • Manage day-to-day digital communications to parents from division leaders, school administrators and department heads, as well as community messaging from the Head of School and Board President.
  • Manage media relations, including reporter contacts and replies to queries.
  • Crisis management team member responsible for timely, emergency communications.
