Research Technologist

General Summary/Purpose:

The general nature or purpose of the job: The Research Technician will set up and perform experiments studying protein translation and folding using molecular biology and single-molecule techniques.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

The Research Technologist will manage a project to study folding of multi-domain proteins in the cell and in single-molecule assays, and characterize their interactions with molecular chaperones.

The technologist will generate data for publication and work with the PI to write a manuscript to publish the results of these studies.

Responsibilities include:

  • Preparing stock solutions, buffers and media.
  • Generating recombinant DNA constructs, expressing and purifying proteins and other reagents.
  • Collecting data using optical tweezers.
  • Analyzing data.
  • Attending and resenting data in lab meetings.
  • Training new laboratory members in procedures and techniques.
  • Managing supplies.
  • Ordering consumables and maintaining records.
  • Upholding safety regulations.

Materials, Machines and/or Equipment used on the Job:

  • E. coli liquid culture, autoclaves, thermocyclers, balances, pH-meters, balances, centrifuges, ultracentrifuges, electrophoresis equipment, and laser tweezers.

Minimum Qualifications (mandatory):

  • Bachelor's degree in biology, biophysics, chemistry or related field is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Some related post-undergraduate work experience preferred.
  • The ideal candidate is planning to attend graduate school or medical school within 2 or 3 years.

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to exercise professional judgment and good written and oral communication skills are desired.
  • Experience with molecular biology techniques (recombinant DNA cloning) and biochemistry techniques is highly desired. Excellent organizational skills are required

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
