General summary/purpose:

The Technical Advisor will play an important role in a newly formed division, Data Science, Learning and Impact, focused on actionable measurement, learning and adaptive management. The Advisor will support the preparation of a wide range of data visualizations to maximize data use and adaptive management across the organization. The position will provide leadership for efforts to build data visualization capacity across the organization, and will support Jhpiego global projects and TLI by developing high-quality, innovative, and user-friendly data visualizations and information graphics. Candidates must possess creative and adaptive thinking skills, be resourceful, have the ability to visually depict data accurately and in ways that are accessible, engaging, actionable, innovative, and relevant to target audiences.

The successful candidate will work collaboratively with technical and program teams to respond to and address data visualization requests. They will need to be able to clearly communicate data insights through project briefs, data visualizations, interactive charts and dashboards, information graphics, and other tools for multiple audiences (advocates, implementers, policy makers, donors, etc.).

Specific duties & responsibilities:

  • Work collaboratively with teams of made up of communications experts, data analysts and managers, monitoring, evaluation, learning and knowledge management staff, program staff, web developers, and technical subject matter experts to solve problems and convey key messages using data visualization best practices and innovative design strategies
  • Develop intuitive and professional static and interactive data visualizations for multiple formats (websites, dashboards, briefs, reports, peer-reviewed journal articles, proposals, and presentations)
  • Distill quantitative and qualitative data to communicate compelling stories to diverse audiences
  • Provide leadership for building Jhpiego’s capacity for data visualization across the organization
  • Proactively and systematically identifies opportunities and approaches to build pools of data visualization expertise in Jhpiego country offices
  • Establish data visualization standards and explore new, cutting-edge tools to periodically raise those standards

Minimum qualifications (mandatory):

  • Master’s degree in a relevant field (business, design, strategy) with a minimum of 10 years work experience
  • 5+ years of relevant experience with demonstrated ability to take complex information and/or large data sets and translate them for use in graphic or interactive visualizations for the web and/or other media
  • Strong portfolio/examples of previous data visualization work (please include link or attachment along with application)
  • Strong specialized skills in data visualization and graphic design
  • Foundational understanding of statistical analysis and tools used to perform such analyses (Excel, Stata, SPSS, or similar)
  • Professional experience with graphic design tools such as the Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, or similar)
  • Professional experience in Microsoft Power BI, as well as working familiarity with other data visualization tools such as Tableau, ArcGIS/QGIS, or similar
  • Ability to collaborate with multiple diverse groups and across teams
  • Ability to work in a complex environment with multiple tasks, short deadlines and intense pressure
  • Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills–strong oral, written communication, and presentations skills
  • Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Awareness of and sensitivity to working in multiple socioeconomic settings with multicultural groups in a developing country environment

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
