Program Director for the Elliott State Research Forest
The Program Director is responsible for representing and leading the interests and research mission of the College to both internal and external stakeholders related to the development of the ESRF. In collaboration with the College leadership team, the Director leads a project team of faculty, specialists, contractors, and consultants in setting program goals, timelines, and work products that will position the College towards establishing and operating the largest, and most complex, university research forest in the nation.
The Director is a member of a large visioning and planning effort to transform the Elliott State Forest into the Elliott State Research Forest. The primary duty of this position is to leading and administering the development of a Forest Management Plan for the 82,000 acre Elliott State Research Forest in collaboration with OSU Leadership, College of Forestry Dean and Faculty, Oregon Department of State Lands, Sovereign Tribal Nations, advisory committees, and the community of stakeholders. The Director collaborates with external stakeholders, including the Department of State Lands and the Governor’s Office, Tribal Governments, Non-Profit Organizations, and citizen interest groups to meet the multiple land use objectives related to managing the ESRF. The Director is responsible for implementing the strategic vision for the ESRF, and develops policies, systems, and performance standards for operational excellence. The Director manages staff and contractors, and will determine resource, facility, and operational needs, as well as develop a funding plan for meeting those resource needs.
The main focus of this position from the start will be to lead the development of a sustainable forest management plan that meets the multiple land use and ecological research objectives noted in our existing research proposal. The Director will coordinate data collection and analysis; provide direction to the planning team and meet milestones and deliverables required of the project; and assess and manage the risks of the management plan to financial sustainability and long-term research projects. The Director will need to establish and maintain key relationships to assess management priorities across the breadth of stakeholder interests and identify/address information needs with a variety of internal and external partners. The Director also supervises the project team consisting of a Coordinator and data analysts, along with various contractors.
What we are looking for:
We are searching for someone with experience in forest management planning and research experience to ensure the project goals are delivered in the management plan. This likely requires a PhD in forestry, ecosystem sciences, natural resources, or some other closely related field. We are looking for a thoughtful leader who can advance sustainable approaches to natural resource management and engage with a group of stakeholders committed to seeing the ESRF come to fruition. We’ll need someone who can get up to speed quickly so we can meet our deliverables timeline.
