The Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts at Coastal Carolina University, located in Conway, South Carolina, invites applications for the full-time position of Visiting Assistant Professor of Music, emphasis in Commercial Music and Jazz Performance starting August 16, 2021.

The successful candidate will assist in teaching courses and ensembles in the Commercial Music and Jazz curriculum, which may include: jazz improvisation, commercial music styles, career development, small and large jazz and commercial ensembles, and applied instruction on the candidate’s principle instrument. Applicants with additional experience in audio and recording technology are particularly encouraged to apply.

The Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts at Coastal Carolina University seeks to recruit and retain a diverse community of scholars whose creative production, teaching, and community engagement focus on the culture, history, and artistic expression of the African Diaspora Community in the United States. We seek teacher-scholars who will serve as mentors for our diverse student body and who have a demonstrated commitment to underrepresented and underserved communities as well as the academic success of all our students. Preference for this position will be given to applicants who can contribute teaching, curriculum development, and creative work in the areas of African American creative arts and performance.

Required Qualifications

Candidates must have completed a Master’s Degree in a related field (jazz performance, commercial music, media composition, studio writing, etc.), though a Doctorate (or commensurate professional/educational experience) is preferred. Candidates should also have a history of excellence as a performer and educator in jazz and commercial genres, as well as a proven track record of recruiting and retaining music students.

The Coastal Carolina University Department of Music serves approximately 90 music majors pursuing Bachelor of Arts degrees in jazz/commercial music, performance, teacher prep, general studies, and a Master of Arts in Music Technology. The Commercial Music and Jazz area features six diverse ensembles and extensively utilizes the Wheelwright Recording Studio, a state-of-the-art facility that documents over 100 musical events a year and has produced national recording projects for Dave Douglas, Ron Daise, and the university’s Athenaeum Press.
