Research Data Analyst

The Department of Medicine, Division of Pulmonary seeks a Research Data Analyst to provide data management and analysis services to assist the Senior Investigators in ongoing and new COPD and Asthma research studies. The Research Data Analyst will work closely with other research team members (e.g. research coordinators) to support the conduct of the research. The individual will help manage, analyze, interpret, and report on research data.

Additionally, the Research Data Analyst will help to organize, clean and conduct rigorous analysis of data for the benefit of the Asthma and COPD Precision Medicine Centers of Excellence (PMCOE). Analysis typically will be handled by automated scripts (created by the data analyst) due to the scale and complexity of the tasks. Will prepare reports from preliminary analysis for publications and presentations under the supervision of the PMCOE PIs and in collaboration with other study team members.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

    Use the formal process for data requests through the PMAP system such as refining cohorts and doing basic analysis based guidance outlined in eFormR, eFormS, and/or eFormA. Assist Project Manager in development of manual of procedures to maintain high quality data. Data management including data checking and cleaning of data. Oversee and perform construction of datasets, variables and data cleaning. Filter and clean data, and review computer reports, printouts, and indicators to locate and correct code problems. Design strategies, analyses, and datacode books. Merge data, create datacode books and recode variables to prepare data for analyses.
Make suggestions or provide solutions to problems related to data management and statistical analysis. Analyze large, complex datasets using a variety of standard statistical techniques and platforms. Specifically, navigating on the SAFE desktop environment using tools like cruncher, Leaf, Python, SQL, and Microsoft Azure. Present and summarize analyses in various formats including raw output, tables, and graphics, oral and written reports. Produce tables and graphs in publication-quality format and present results to senior investigators. Use standard computer software packages and major statistical analysis software packages for analyzing data, using a variety of standard statistical techniques. Prepare analysis plans and writes detailed specifications for analysis files. Prepare preliminary and interim analyses reports regarding the status of the database and analytical activites as well as reviews reports to verify data.
  • Provide preliminary and interim analyses of data; additionally, perform statistical calculations and under the guidance of senior investigators and to assist with preparation of reports, scientific abstracts and method section of manuscripts related to projects.
  • Serves as a program reviewer and quality control checkpoint person for analyses (conducted by self or by others). Serve as a liaison between PIs and data coordinating center Perform statistical calculations and assists with preparation of progress reports, scientific abstracts, grants, and publications. Participate in writing statistical plans for grants and papers for publication under the supervision of the senior investigators. As well as, help to write statistical sections of study reports. Provide research design guidance of study investogators and consultants; assist in the development of questionnaires by making recommendations to data collection procedures and databases structures. Provide training, assistance, and advice to students and research staff on data analysis, analysis techniques, and the use of the analysis system, and large, complex databases. Attend weekly scientific meetings and other meetings with investigators. Performs multiple tasks and other functions outside the scope of this position.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    Bachelor's degree in biostatistics, statistics, epidemiology or a related quantitative field required. Three years of related experience required. Additional education (Master’s level) may substitute for some required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

    Preferred Qualifications: Master's degree in biostatistics, statistics, epidemiology or a related quantitative field preferred.

    JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum experience required for the respective job.

    Additional Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

      Know how to navigate on the SAFE desktop environment using tools like cruncher, Leaf, Python, SQL, and Microsoft Azu Knowledge of R, STATA, SAS, Access, Excel, MS Word and RedCap Experience in statistical analysis, database management and data analysis including longitudinal analysis.

    Physical Requirements:

      Sitting in a normal seated position for extended periods of time. Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction. Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s), for example, using a keyboard. Ability to move standard equipment through a hospital or clinical environment.

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
