General Summary/Purpose:

We are looking for an experienced researcher for the position of a Sr. Research Specialist. The Sr. Research Specialist will join the productive research program in our well-funded Laboratory focused on the development of innovative cell and gene therapies for the treatment of inflammation and cancers, using immune- and virus-based approaches.

This position requires a proficient and experienced laboratory scientist with a solid foundation in molecular biology, cloning and tissue culture. A previous experience with virus is a plus. After introduced to the techniques and platforms, successful candidate can conduct research independently or with minimal supervision, with knowledge of molecular cloning, DNA manipulation and virus purification. With limited supervision by the PI, this individual will design and perform laboratory experiments, analyze data, and may also contribute to manuscripts. Identifies and resolves common problems and uses analytical skills to implement assigned projects. He/She will provide training to other individuals who may be assigned to the laboratory on a regular or temporary basis.

Specific Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Exhibit a sophisticated understanding of the molecular biology
  • Performs routine and complex research laboratory tests in accordance with established standards and procedures which may include making protocol modification within the parameters set by investigator. As a gene therapy lab, it is preferable if the applicant is able to work on: 1) routine sterile cell culture; 2) cloning; 3) molecular biology techniques; and 4) animal handling.
  • Independently processes and analyzes data, formulates conclusions and creates appropriate statistical presentations, including graphs and charts, for the purpose of reporting research/laboratory results, grant reports or scientific presentations
  • Operates basic laboratory equipment such as centrifuge, pH meter, analytical balance, scintillation counter, spectrophotometer, light microscope, and/or utilizes laminar flow hood. May also utilize other sophisticated instrumentation such as fluorescence, luminescence spectrophotometer.
  • Manage and make purchases of basic laboratory supplies and specific project necessities. This will require monitoring inventory levels of materials and supplies, as well as communication with and knowledge of relevant vendors.
  • Meet regularly with PI and colleagues to review lab data, troubleshoot problems, prioritize tasks, and discuss newly published scientific literature relevant to the cell and gene therapy field
  • Collaborate with the PI in overseeing the administrative and scientific implementation and maintenance of the research protocols for our research studies, setting agendas and schedules for routine research-related meetings and other activities.
  • Educate, train, and supervise new students and other research staff that assist in the project
  • The specialist will be responsible for completing renewal of registrations pertaining to recombinant DNA, human tissue and pathogens, and for amending and renewing the animal care and use agreements.
  • The Sr. Research Specialist will monitor equipment performance and maintenance and be responsible for scheduling repairs and renewing service contracts when necessary.
  • Renew and amend animal care and use protocols.
  • Renew biosafety registrations.
  • Keep the laboratory prepared for safety inspections.
Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, or a related field required.
  • Four (4) years of experience in a comparable laboratory performing relevant techniquesrequired.
  • Master's degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

JHU Equivalency Formula:18 graduate degree credits (semester hours), with related graduate research, may substitute for one year of experience.For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Candidates with a Ph.D. or Master’s degree are strongly encouraged to apply

And/Or

  • 5+ years of experience in a comparable laboratory performing relevant techniques, coupled with knowledge of biological sciences, molecular biology, or chemistry.
  • Actual strong research experience in molecular biology is preferred.

Special knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Able to perform scientific research through conducing laboratory experiments using a variety of techniques, such as cell culture, cloning, microscopy, DNA extraction, PCR, Western blotting, tumor animal procedures, and others.
  • Knowledge of basic and translational research and principles required, particularly in cancer and gene therapy research.
  • Ability to follow protocols, policies and procedures and respond appropriately when presented with novel situations.
  • Excellent organizational and analytical skills.
  • Proficiency in the use of software applications, databases, spreadsheets, and word processing required.
  • Able to organize and prioritize work and follow through on assignments.
  • Have excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to work with a diverse research staff and with confidential materials.
