The School of Nursing seeks aCAPABLE Research Nurse(Research Nurse) to work on two studies: CAPABLE Family and DAPPER. The responsibilities will be similar for each.

For CAPABLE, the Research Nurse will work with others to adapt and implement the CAPABLE program to include people who live with dementia. CAPABLE includes a CAPABLE program of four home visits in which the Research Nurse will:

  • Meet participants and conduct a semi-structured clinical interview to identify and prioritize problem areas relating to medications, pain, depression, strength and balance.
  • Assess and work on patient management of medication, pain, and depression for study participants.
  • Engage participants in problem solving to identify behavioral and environmental contributors to medication management, pain, and depression.
  • Reinforce strategy use, and review problem solving, refine strategy use, and provide education and resources to address future needs.
  • Coordinate with the study OT on progress.
  • Incorporate older adult’s care partners or family members in the program.

The Research Nurse will also work with others to adapt and implement the DAPPER program, which is a research intervention focused on older African American women with pain, depression and frailty. Responsibilities of the Research Nursing on the Dapper study include:

  • Meet participants and conduct semi-structured clinical interviews to identify and prioritize problem areas relating to pain and depressive symptoms (virtual or in person).
  • Assess and work on patient management of pain and depressive symptoms for study participants.
  • Engage participants in problem solving to identify behavioral and environmental contributors to pain and depressive symptoms.
  • Reinforce strategy use, and review problem solving, refine strategy use, and provide education and resources to address future needs.
  • Attend team meetings, enter data and submit reports for nurse visits.

Minimum Qualifications:

Individual must be a registered nurse, licensed in the State of Maryland or state where practicing. Bachelor's degree in nursing or related discipline preferred. Current CPR certification required. Must maintain current licensure and certification during duration of employment.

Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in nursing or related discipline preferred. Experience in home or community settings preferred.

Physical Requirements:

Sitting, standing and walking for extended period. Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction. Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s). Ability to move standard equipment through a hospital or clinical environment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
