Job Summary

The College of Arts and Sciences at CU Boulder is now encouraging applications for an Academic Coach ! As a member of the Academic Advising Center in the College of Arts & Sciences, Academic Coaches promote student success by providing outreach, support, and programming to target populations including high priority students and students on academic warning to enhance student retention and graduation. Academic Coaches offer a structured, collaborative approach to support students’ academic progress. Academic Coaches provide individualized guidance and ongoing feedback as they meet one- on-one with students and help students maximize academic success by coaching on a variety of academic skills and strategies such as goal setting, test preparation skills, motivation, learning strategies, and study techniques, for example. Academic Coaches serve as a key point of contact for establishing student success teams as needed, including partnering with faculty and academic advisors and serving as a key point of contact for campus- and college-referral processes.

Utilizing the Arts and Science’s Academic Coaching Program’s Theory of Action Framework, you will help students build academic skills while proactively connecting them to necessary support resources. Coaches may work with students in group settings via workshops, presentations, campus events, and other activities.

The College of Arts and Sciences Academic Coaches work in a disciplinary team setting to support students by focusing on each student’s developmental needs regarding the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to achieve academic and personal success. Academic Coaches facilitate change by helping students develop research-based academic skills, and they support and challenge students, helping them to clarify their goals, values, and motivation.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Individual and Group Work with Students
  • Conduct proactive outreach and intervention activities with students selecting those strategies where there is a strong likelihood of making a difference in student persistence and academic success. Populations may include high priority students, students on academic warning, and first- year and continuing students.
  • Initiate and maintain frequent contact with and coaching for students and provide follow-up on a regular basis discussing the students’ challenges, self awareness, and progress.
  • Assess students’ academic needs and aid in the implementation of a success plan addressing the cause of the students’ challenges including: time management, work/life balance, attendance, study habits and other factors manifested in student academic performance concerns, and develop strategies in collaboration with students to improve academic performance.
  • Assist students in clarifying their values and in understanding their abilities, interests, limitations, and goals.
  • Help students relate their values to decisions about academic success.
  • Monitor students’ academic performance and intervene with students in academic difficulty to coach on new approaches for academic success skills and to refer them to appropriate support services.
  • Facilitate academic skills workshops and group coaching for student success.

Administrative Coordination and College and Campus Collaboration
  • Oversee administrative tasks related to:
    • Collecting early/midterm grades.
    • Organizing training for academic advisors, and graduate intern coaches.
    • Communicating with faculty and academic advisors; and collaborating with academic coaches across campus.
  • Partner with academic advisors, faculty, Division of Student Affairs, college administration and department chairs, and other campus offices and programs to facilitate and support student success.
  • Collaborate with faculty, advisors, residence life and student support offices to develop the Academic Coaching Program services.
  • Possess knowledge about all support services and educational programs on campus and refer students to these as appropriate. Engage in continuous training on campus policies, resources, and support structures.
  • Work closely with coaching supervisor and other coaching/advising colleagues on mastering coaching skill and approach.
  • Create and edit student success resources.

Assessment
  • Maintain accurate and detailed contact notes, track student performance, and develop reports on the academic success and graduation of target populations.
  • Ensure the confidentiality of all academic records.
  • Create and assess learning outcomes, and track student success.


What We Can Offer

Annual Salary is $48,000.

What We Require

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • 1 year of professional experience in a higher education or high school setting working with students in providing one-on-one and group interactions to assist in their academic success and graduation.
  • Note: 1 year of graduate work/assistantship experience may be substituted for the one year of professional experience.

  • Demonstrated passion for working with students from entry to graduation within a high-volume setting.


What We Would Like You To Have

  • Master’s degree in student affairs in higher education, counseling, psychology, education, social work or related field.
  • 2+ years of academic coaching experience.
  • 2+ years of professional experience working with students in areas such as academic advising, counseling, or in high school pre-collegiate/college preparatory programs.
  • Experience facilitating academic success workshops and/or groups
  • Strengths-based, developmental advising and/or coaching experience using appreciative and intrusive approaches.
  • Experience coaching and/or advising students on or nearing academic warning.
