Job Summary
This position is Monday – Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Some flexibility will be required as schedule may involve working beyond 5:00 p.m., some weekends, and/or holidays.
The individual in this position will performs various animal health care duties and medical tests for the care and treatment of animals.
Essential Functions
The individual selected for this position will work directly with the Equine Internal Medicine service.
Organizes, cleans, stocks, and prepares treatment rooms for examination of animals, and holds or restrains animals during examination, treatment, or inoculation.
Administers injections, anesthesia, serums, vaccines, and treatments to animals, including tasks such as dressing wounds, cleaning teeth, and taking vital signs of animals under the direction of a veterinarian.
Performs laboratory tests to assist in the diagnosis and treatment of animal health problems.
Cares for and monitors the condition of animals before, during, and/or after surgery.
Collects, prepares, and labels samples for laboratory testing and assists with research projects.
Performs emergency first aid, such as emergency resuscitation or other life saving procedures.
Assists with student instruction programs through preparation of materials, observing, monitoring and/or grading tasks, and presenting orientation and procedures briefings.
May triage phone calls from referring veterinarians/clients as well as schedule appointments for diagnostic procedures under the direction of a veterinarian
May fill prescriptions, measure medications, and label containers.
May be responsible for training, assisting or assigning tasks to others. May provide input to performance reviews of other employees

Associates degree in Veterinary Technology or a related field that qualifies an individual to obtain national certification. Indicated education is required; no substitutions allowed.

Requirements for Additional Job Levels
Depending on the combination of education and experience, selected candidates may be hired as an Veterinary Assistant, Technician, or Specialist, and assigned Levels I, II or III .
Consideration for entry-level Veterinary Assistant requires:
1. High school diploma or equivalent for Level I, and two (2) years of experience for Level II, or four (4) years of experience for Level III, including at least two (2) years at the preceding level or equivalent.
Salary range: determined by eligibility for Level I, II, III
Consideration for entry-level Veterinary Technician requires:
1. Associate’s degree in a technical or scientific field related to the area of assignment. Level II requires Associate’s degree plus two (2) years of experience. Level III requires Associate’s degree plus four (4) years of experience, with at least two (2) years at the preceding level or equivalent.
2. Active license with the Alabama State Board of Veterinary Medicine as a Veterinary Technician, have met all requirements to become licensed, or have passed the Veterinary Technician National Exam ( VTNE ). Veterinary Technician certification or license must be obtained within 6 months of employment.
Salary range: determined by eligibility for Level I, II or III
Consideration for entry-level Veterinary Specialist requires:
1. Associate’s degree in a technical or scientific field related to area of assignment plus three (3) years of experience. Level II requires an Associates degree plus four (4) years of experience, with at least one (1) year at the preceding level or equivalent. Level III requires an Associate’s degree plus six (6) years of experience with at least two (2) years at the preceding level or equivalent.
2. Active license with the Alabama State Board of Veterinary Medicine as a Veterinary Technician Veterinary Technician Certification having passed the Veterinary Technician National Exam ( VTNE ); Veterinary Technician Specialist in Emergency and Critical Care ~ VTS ( ECC ) as designated by Academy of Veterinary Emergency & Critical Care Technicians ( AVECCT ).
