Job Summary


These are 1 year, limited term positions contingent on availability of funds located at the Gulf Coast Research and Extension Center in Fairhope, AL. The successful candidates in these positions will conduct research on marine fishes and invertebrates in the northern Gulf of Mexico.

Essential Functions

Essential functions include, but are not limited to the following: building artificial reefs and participating in offshore research cruises; conducting ecological and assessment studies on age, growth, and reproduction of marine fish; diet analyses; performing mark and recapture, ultrasonic telemetry, reef fish surveys, interactions, hydroacoustic surveys, and SCUBA surveys; presenting results of research at professional meetings, maintain and care for laboratory captive fishes and invertebrates in a controlled environment; using and maintaining laboratory equipment; maintaining and operating research vessels; and performing other duties as assigned.

Master's degree from an accredited institution

Minimum Skills and Abilities

Excellent interpersonal communication skills

Minimum Technology Skills

Computer skills in using programs such as Excel, ArcGIS, and SAS are helpful

Minimum License and Certifications

Must possess or have the ability to successfully obtain a boater’s operator license immediately following the start date.

Desired Qualifications

1. Experience with identification of northern Gulf of Mexico marine fishes.

2. Experience with marine fish analyses.

3. SCUBA certification.

Salary Grade


Salary Range

$31,300 - $65,500
