Position Details

The Office of International Student Affairs ( OISA ) provides support, advice and programming for Wesleyan’s diverse community of international students. OISA facilitates students’ adjustment to life at Wesleyan, coordinates support for undergraduate international students, and collaborates with other offices across the University to ensure international students thrive on campus. The office oversees student immigration compliance, plans and implements International Student Orientation, convenes the International Student Advisory Board, and collaborates with the Fries Center for Global Studies on programs of interest to international students and the broader Wesleyan community.

Reporting to the Dean of Students, the Director of the Office of International Student Affairs provides a wide range of assistance and support to promote the transition and success of Wesleyan’s international student population.

Responsibilities include:

ADVISING
Provide mentoring and advice to support international students in making successful academic, cultural, and social progress from their matriculation through their graduation.

Serve as an advisor to international student organizations and program housing.

PROGRAMMING
Develop and implement an international student orientation to educate students and assist in their transition to the academic environment of Wesleyan, and to the American culture more generally.

Coordinate and initiate transitional programming and retention initiatives, as well as campus-wide cultural awareness events.

Collaborate with student organizations, other student affairs departments and the Fries Center for Global Studies to design and deliver programs and activities that bridge the international student experience and the domestic student experience.

Create programs, workshops, and conversations that support international students in making informed decisions about their career options after graduation in collaboration with the Gordon Career Center.

ADMINSTRATION
Oversee and supervise (coach, mentor, develop and provide feedback) the International Student Affairs staff.

Supervise student interns working specifically with OISS .

Oversee effective administrative, data management, and communication procedures, including management of the OISA’s operating budget and program reports.

Assist with foreign credentials evaluation and conversion to US equivalents.

Maintain website and provide updates as related to the international student population.

Other related duties as requested.

IMMIGRATION MANAGEMENT
Monitor the interface between the Peoplesoft, Terra Dota and SEVIS including data input and student information.

Monitor the SEVIS alerts, lists, and run SEVIS reports.

Follow up with international students and scholars to make all necessary updates and corrections which are vital to maintain immigration status and university compliance.
Keep track of all technical changes of SEVIS II.

LIASION
Serve as a liaison for the campus community on international student issues.
Communicate with prospective students and their families as needed.
Chair the International Student Advisory Board.


Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of six years of experience in international student advising, international education, student affairs, admissions, or a closely related field or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Knowledge of SEVIS regulations and experience working with the SEVIS database.

Experience as a Designated School Official ( DSO ) at a post-secondary college in the US.

Prior experience in programming and providing retention benefits to incoming International students.

Some direct or indirect supervisory experience.

Effective communication skills with cross-cultural sensitivity.

Demonstrated leadership skills and experience in crisis management.

Demonstrated ability to work independently and pay attention to detail and accuracy.

Ability to work some evening and weekends as needed.

Demonstrated commitment to work within a diverse environment and interact openly with individuals of different backgrounds.


Preferred Qualifications

Master’s preferred
Proficiency in a second language
