The Department of African American Studies (AASD) in the College of Behavioral and Social  Sciences at the University of Maryland, College Park is seeking to fill the position of Lecturer.  This person will also serve as Director of Undergraduate Studies (DUGS). This is a full-time, 9- month, non-tenured position, with promotion opportunities. Initial appointment will be for one academic year with renewal subject to review of candidate’s performance. 

The Department of African American Studies is an interdisciplinary social science department engaged in the study of African American life and is committed to translating scholarship into practice and policy. The department prefers candidates who have prior experience in academic advising and curriculum development; evidence of innovation in teaching and developing interdisciplinary collaborations; knowledge of student learning outcomes assessments; and an understanding of the diverse needs of undergraduates. This position requires excellent interpersonal, writing, and communication skills. Interest and experience in race, social justice,  and public policy are required. 

Duties include: 

Teaching – Ensure the quantity and quality of undergraduate courses; lead efforts to enhance and innovate undergraduate teaching, and work with faculty to shape the undergraduate curriculum in preparation for future growth opportunities. Develop and support efforts by faculty to use technology and other methods to innovate and make teaching more effective. The teaching load is negotiable with the Department Chair. 

Administration – Administer the undergraduate office and maintain a productive relationship with the Office of the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Education and other relevant BSOS and campus entities. 

Service – Promote African American Studies at the University of Maryland and beyond. Advise students and support and supervise undergraduate advising staff. 

Minimum qualifications include a Ph.D. in African American Studies or a related discipline, a  minimum of two years of experience teaching at the college level, and previous administrative experience.

AASD centers on the Black experience through research, scholarship, and teaching.  Understanding and addressing structural racism, inequity, and racial injustice are central to the mission and vision of the department. AASD faculty are engaged in intersectional interdisciplinary research in anthropology, sociology, criminology, public health, medicine,  artificial intelligence, history, labor, Black women’s studies, and the digital humanities. The department offers minors in Black Women’s Studies and African Studies, and a certificate in  African American Studies. The Judge Alexander Williams, Jr. Center for Education, Justice and  Ethics, a policy and research center, is also situated in the department.
