General Summary/Purpose

A dynamic research laboratory specializing in neuromedical control systems is seeking a research assistant with training and/or experience in computational biology to carry out a project analyzing data related to neural activity.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

Under the direct supervision of the Principal Investigator, the research assistant will be provided a data set that includes nonhuman primates executing a motor task. This independent research study will be to relate the neural activity in premotor and primary motor regions of the brain to kinematic variables. The research assistant will also study how these relationships change when motor areas are compromised. Specifically, the research assistant will analyze how tracking specific commands degrades when motor areas are compromised. These analyses will complement the model development and theory proposed in a larger motor control study.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or related technical discipline
  • Some work experience in a biomedical engineering research lab also required.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Coursework in quantitative science such as mathematics, physics, engineering, or computer science
  • Experience applying mathematical models to biological data, particularly neural data
  • Experience working with large datasets
  • Experience with statistical techniques used to fit models to data
Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to program in MATLAB
  • Ability to work collaboratively with teams of scientists across disciplines

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
