General Summary/Purpose:

The North American AIDS Cohort Collaboration on Research and Design (NA-ACCORD) study team is looking for a Biostatistician to help us produce rigorous, relevant scientific results of studies focused on Ending the HIV Epidemic in the United States, aging with HIV, and the development and application of statistical methods to address research needs in a long-term collaboration of HIV cohort studies. The NA-ACCORD is the largest collaboration of adults living with HIV in the US and Canada, and the study is currently in its 14th year. Observational, longitudinal, individual-level data are pooled using a collaborative study design across >20 interval and clinical cohort studies of >190,000 adults living with HIV in the US and Canada that have contributed >1.3 million person-years of follow-up (www.naaccord.org).

The Biostatistician will join a team of data managers, computer programmers, and other biostatisticians who use data to help execute study aims and hypotheses. Experience with longitudinal observational (as opposed to clinical trials) data is preferred, including survival analysis. The successful applicant will provide critical analytic rigor to answering scientific questions of interest. Collaboration with others on the team is critical for this position.

Specific Duties/Responsibilities:

This biostatistician position will be filled by someone who can provide expertise on statistical design, data management, and data analyses to answer research questions using observational, longitudinal data, and will participate as a co-author in preparation of manuscripts and presentations reporting study results. Applicant must be willing to work collaboratively with the NA-ACCORD Epidemiology/Biostatistics Core (EBC) study team in consultation with scientific investigators at the contributing cohorts, as well as external scientific investigators, on:

  • Formation of statistical designs specific to the study objective
  • Drafting statistical analysis plans
  • Generate analytic data sets, including analysis of cohort-level data to ensure proper participant selection
  • Analysis of individual-level data to answer the scientific question of interest
  • Identify potential problems with study data and collaborate with the data managers to resolve issues encountered
  • Preparing data tables and figures for publications and presentations at scientific meetings
  • Contribute to technical/scientific writing and reviewing drafts of reports, posters, and manuscripts, including writing up interpretation of analysis results and description of statistical methods used
  • Documenting decision making during the conduct of studies and archiving code for the purposes of reproducibility of research findings
  • Navigating shared files and contributing to shared files to create a transparent research workspace
  • Attend weekly EBC staff meetings and provide updates on status of projects

Abilities needed:

  • Ability to work independently
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, including organizing and investigating possible solutions and presenting them to the EBC team for discussion
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for the preparation and presentation of results
  • Interpersonal skills in dealing with investigators and a “team-oriented” approach with other EBC team members and scientific investigators
Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in biostatistics, epidemiology, or related quantitative field required.
  • One (1) year of related experiencerequired.
  • Demonstrated ability on significant graduate project or additional doctoral education may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

JHU Equivalency Formula:Demonstrated ability on significant graduate project or additional doctoral education may substitute for one year of experience.For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Excellent interpersonal skills that can enable enjoyable collaboration with diverse study staff and investigators
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, with a positive attitude that allows all problems to be broken into manageable parts and tackled (comes from a place of “yes”)
  • Excellent written and communication skills, including the ability to provide meticulous documentation of processes and organize materials in a transparent, cloud-based environment
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects (with prioritization assistance provided)
  • Ability to work for periods of time without daily direction from investigators
  • Interest in machine learning tools
  • Experience in observational, longitudinal analyses, including survival analyses
  • Experience in collaborative study designs (see Lesko K,et al. International Journal of Epidemiology, 2018;47(2):654-66.)

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • SAS programming proficiency (mastery preferred)
  • R and R markdown programing proficiency (mastery preferred)
  • Working knowledge of UNIX OS
  • Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) proficiency (mastery preferred)

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
