The Chemical Safety Assistant will support the University’s new centralized chemical receiving area and receive, track, and distribute chemicals out to campus use locations. This position will assist with tracking, monitoring, and maintaining the University wide chemical inventory using the University’s chemical tracking software system. The Chemical Safety Assistant will directly report to the Chemical Safety Specialist and support the EHSS department in promoting and enhancing laboratory chemical safety and compliance.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in chemistry or another science major with a strong knowledge of chemicals.
Minimum 2 years of experience with chemical handling and safety including familiarity with chemical safety data sheets.
Knowledge of chemical safety data sheets, chemical compatibility and shipping requirements preferred.
Strong data management skills and ability to effectively use Microsoft Office application suite and data management software applications.
Must be able to communicate effectively with a diverse campus population.
Successful candidate is expected to establish their principal residence in the Central New York area within approximately 30 minutes driving distance from Syracuse University.
Job Specific Qualifications
Strong knowledge of chemicals and related safety and compliance requirements.
Able to lift up to 50 lbs., and able to handle and maneuver chemical drums, boxes and containers and transport them across campus using carts, dollies and/or University vehicles.
Position requires a lot of walking, bending, and lifting.
Excellent written, verbal, and analytical skills and strong attention to detail.
Demonstrated outstanding interpersonal skills.
Ability to work autonomously in a highly matrixed, decentralized and complex work environment.
Willingness to work collaboratively in support of all areas of the EHSS Department.
Excellent organization and time management skills
Must be medically fit and able to wear proper PPE including respiratory protection.
Valid driver’s license is required to drive a University vehicle around campus.
HAZWOPER 40 or 24 Hour certification preferred.
Responsibilities
Chemical Inventory Management:
Assists with the maintenance and collection of the University wide chemical inventory using the University’s chemical tracking software system.
Adheres to chemical tracking software policies and procedures and communicates information to users. Reports and investigates software problems and concerns observed or reported.
Assists with periodic audits of chemical use area inventories and chemical tracking system information.
Verifies that safety data sheets ( SDS ) for University chemicals are available in the chemical tracking software system. Requests SDSs from chemical suppliers and SDS updates to the software by the software provider when necessary.
Assists with routine audits to ensure chemical inventory compliance with applicable regulations and prepares related reports.
Chemical Receiving Area:
Follows policies and procedures related to safe chemical handling, receiving, and distribution. Ensure proper storage of chemicals and/or materials, if applicable.
Receives chemical deliveries at the centralized chemical receiving area. Barcodes and inputs incoming chemicals into the chemical tracking software system.
Distributes all incoming chemicals to chemical use areas in a timely manner. Transports chemical containers safely across the Syracuse University Campus, including driving a University vehicle, and delivers chemicals safely and securely to chemical use areas.
Adheres to and enforces policies and procedures for shipping of hazardous chemicals and/or materials. Provides guidance and assists with the shipment of outgoing hazardous chemicals and/or materials.
Chemical Safety:
Monitors and reviews chemical inventory and incoming chemicals for safety and compliance.
Offers chemical safety assistance, guidance and support to chemical users.
Assists in the development of technical guidance and other informational materials to promote and enhance chemical laboratory safety and compliance.
Reports any chemical safety related inquiries, requests and concerns to supervisor and supports supervisor in addressing them.
General Safety Support:
Supports other EHSS staff to foster overall safety in the laboratories including offering collaborative support EHSS¿ biosafety, radiation safety and general laboratory safety programs as needed.
Participates in chemical, biological or environmental incident investigations and spill response actions including the continued ability to use chemical protective suits, respirators, specialized equipment and air monitoring devices.
