Brief Summary of Work for this Position

The School of Health and Applied Human Sciences in the College of Health and Human Services at the University of North Carolina Wilmington invites applications for the Associate School Director. In collaboration with the School Director, the Associate School Director will provide administrative leadership, oversight, and coordination for all academic degree programs. Specifically, the Associate School Director will:

(1) Coordinate curriculum development and approval processes
(2) Provide oversight to assure student and faculty compliance with university policies
(3) Coordinate the faculty peer review of teaching process
(4) Assist in the facilitation of resources for faculty development, program marketing and community engagement;
(5) coordinate academic course scheduling
(6) Facilitate the student appeal process
(7) Assist students on issues related to academic progression and/or retention
(8) Other academic processes and procedures critical for ensuring the success of our academic programs and our students.

The successful candidate will also teach courses in their area of expertise, and depending on rank, will maintain a focused line of scholarly inquiry and publication, actively procure grants, and engage in service appropriate to support the school and the college.

The Associate School Director is a full-time, 12-month administrative appointment.

This successful candidate will be expected to relocate to Southeastern North Carolina and maintain a campus presence as part of the School faculty. The Associate School Director will report to the Director of the School of Health and Applied Human Sciences.

Note: If the successful candidate holds a Masters degree (i.e., not a terminal degree) then they will be employed at the rank of Lecturer. If the successful candidate holds a Terminal degree then they must qualify for appointment at the rank of Associate Professor / Professor with tenure.

Appointments begin on August 2021.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

All applicants must have the following qualifications:
• Masters degree or a Terminal degree in a discipline within the school or in a closely-related field
• At least 2-years of successful experience in an administrative role within a large academic unit
• Successful history of strong interpersonal skills and professional relationship building
• Evidence of strong organizational skills
• Experience with academic scheduling
• Experience with the curricular design and approval processes
• Demonstrated success in working with students in academic distress

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience

Preference will be given to candidates with a Master’s degree who have the following qualifications:
• Active membership and leadership roles in professional societies within field
• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with constituents across the college and university
• Commitment to a diverse and inclusive learning environment
• Experience in academic program development and administration
• Positive national reputation in field

Preference will be given to candidates with a Terminal degree who have the following qualifications:
• Active membership and leadership roles in professional societies within field

The School of Health and Applied Human Sciences ( SHAHS ) has five undergraduate degree programs:

• Exercise Science
• Healthful Living and Fitness Education
• Recreation, Sport Leadership, and Tourism Management
• Recreation Therapy

The SHAHS also has Master of Science degrees in:
• Athletic Training
• Healthcare Administration
• Gerontology with 4+1 options:
o (Bachelors / Masters) with Public Health / Gerontology
o Recreation Therapy / Gerontology
o Exercise Science / Gerontology

The SHAHS also supports a Masters of Arts in Teaching ( MAT ) and a Masters of Education concentration in Physical Education and Health through the Watson College of Education.

College/School Information

The College of Health and Human Services was created in July 2010 to provide UNCW with a new mechanism to link and focus its health-related research, professional continuing education, and health knowledge dissemination and application. In the formative stage of development, the CHHS is currently home to three professional schools: School of Health and Applied Human Sciences, School of Nursing, and School of Social Work. The College seeks to be nationally recognized for its inter-professional and collaborative approach to enhancing the health and quality of life of individuals, families, and communities in southeastern North Carolina and beyond.
