Teach one section of IST682 – Cultural Competence for Information Professionals, online.
This course prepares information professionals to develop cultural competencies and provide inclusive services to underrepresented populations by focusing on knowledge and skill development including location, selection, evaluation, and discussion of various genres and formats of resources as well as instruction for strategies to use these resources.
Additional Course Description
After taking this course, the students will be able to:
• Recognize salient facets of cultural competence, particularly in relation to U.S. library and information services.
• Demonstrate cultural competence in location, selection, evaluation, and developing collections of resources.
• Implement strategies for using various genres and resources to meet information needs.
• Engage in respectful and informed discussion of and deliberations about issues related to cross cultural competence.
• Create an equitable cultural environment for your library community.
Qualifications
Applicants must have an ALA accredited degree and experience in a professional library role (minimum of three years).
Job Specific Qualifications Responsibilities
Prior to the first class session:
• Meet with and collaborate with Course Leads, who are responsible for creating the course syllabus and course content, as well as providing an overview of his/her overall vision for the course.
• Attend onboarding and training with the iSchool’s FCTL, the Online Faculty Support Team and the 2SU platform/learning management system.
• Preview asynchronous portion of course in preparation for planning and conducting the synchronous section in alignment with the asynchronous content.
• Order the appropriate books and materials in advance of the class start date.
• Prepare lesson plans, projects or other student assignments as needed to complement the synchronous-session frame that may have been provided by the course lead.
• Maintain regular communication with students.
• Grade student assignments and exams in a timely manner; provide feedback when appropriate.
After the class is completed:
• Submit final class grades before the University deadline.
• Encourage students to complete the course evaluation.
