Position Summary

The Medical Assistant 2 functions as member of the Student Health Center health care team. Under the supervision of the Administrative Director of the Student Health Center and in consultation with the Medical Staff, Registered Nurses and Medical Technologist, the Medical Assistant 2 provides support involving a combination of patient care functions and administrative functions. The Medical Assistant 2 is an advocate for the patient, demonstrating concern for the patient’s physical, psychological, emotional, and social well-being. With this position, greater hours are expected during the academic year (late August-late May), with a reduction in hours over the summer (late May-late August).

Required Qualifications

• Knowledge of principles, theories, standard practices, methods, and procedures associated
with training as a Medical Assistant, including taking vital signs, collecting laboratory specimens, and assisting medical providers.
• Knowledge and ethical application of patient examination procedures, medical terminology, medical supplies, medical equipment, and laboratory instruments and procedures.
• Knowledge of when to confer with a physician or other health professional about the emotional or physical condition of a patient.
• CPR certification or willingness to become CPR -certified.
• A professional and courteous manner of behavior and speech when interacting and communicating with patients, co-workers and providers.
• Strong organizational skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with computer technology and electronic medical record systems.
• Medical Assistant certification.
• Experience in a college health setting.

Physical Demands

• Standing and walking for 6 to 8 hours per work day; frequent lifting up to 10 lbs.

Working conditions and environment

• Typical office hours (7:45am-4:30pm) Monday through Friday
• Full time hours during academic year, with reduced hours in summer months
• No after-hours crisis coverage required.
• No required travel, weekend, holidays.
• Rare evenings for special events (optional)

Provide Nursing and Provider Support

Duties to Support Responsibility

• Escort patients to examination rooms; take vital signs; obtain medical histories; explain procedures to patients; document information on the appropriate form.
• Prepare the patient for examinations, treatments, and procedures. Assist the providers and nursing staff as needed.
• Provide patient with basic health care information, health promotion, and disease prevention.
• Complete patient health history forms and documents (e.g. work or sport physical exams) in consultation with patient.
• Perform tests and procedures with clearly defined orders (i.e. EKG, vision, hearing, peak flow, and nebulizer.)
• Prepare and administer immunizations and other medications as directed.
• Provide patient education including actions and side effects of medications, immunizations, oral contraceptives, Depo-Provera injections, inhalers, and nebulizers.
• Coordinate and schedule patient appointments and tests; initiate referral when needed.
• Initiate and assist providers with emergency situations.
• Identify community resources available to students, providing information to patients as needed.
• Observe and practice Universal Precaution Guidelines in regard to patient and health care worker safety (i.e. bloodborne pathogens, contaminated body fluids, hazard chemical exposures).
• Sanitize and sterilize surgical instruments.
• Clean exam room and equipment, and restocks exam rooms as needed.
• Maintain an inventory of departmental and medical supplies/instruments for examinations, procedures, and staff areas.
• Assist in the monitoring of laboratory and x-ray data. Inform provider (physician, nurse practitioner, physician assistant) of abnormal results.
• Answer telephone, document telephone messages to and from patients, and explain test results and procedures to patients.
• Telephone and fax prescriptions to pharmacies and other clinics.
• Participate in the training of entry-level Medical Assistants.
• Participate in ongoing education enhancing personal and professional growth.

Duties to Support Responsibility

• Perform clerical front office duties including answering the telephone, directing calls, and scheduling patient appointments.
• Collect and perform laboratory tests and procedures under the supervision of the Medical Technologist.
• Maintain departmental confidentiality protocol including medical records, computer information, financial, and personal information.
• Serve on Student Health Center Committees as assigned.
• Support the Division of Student Affairs mission and goals, and the mission of the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.
• Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
