Job Summary/Basic Function

The principal role of the Discovery and Access Librarian is to assist the Collection Management department in its mission of ensuring the organization and discoverability of the library’s electronic collections. In cooperation with other library staff, the Discovery and Access Librarian guides resource access management, resource discovery optimization, and metadata enrichment and management. The Discovery and Access Librarian also assists with coverage of the reference desk at the Customer Service Center and has liaison duties to one or more departments at Liberty University. This position reports to the Head of Collection Management.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Works with other faculty and staff in Collection Management and throughout the library to ensure access to electronic resources, including databases, journals, streaming video, and e-books, through the library management system, Ex Libris’ Alma; OpenAthens/EZ Proxy; Springshare; the university learning management system; and other platforms.
• Collaborates with other Collection Management faculty and staff, as well as library vendors, to maintain continuity of access to library resources through activation, troubleshooting, and testing.
• Enhances discoverability of library resources by recommending and leading projects related to discovery service customization and optimization of resource metadata.
• Evaluates and interprets statistical information related to cost and use of resources.
• Participates in departmental and organizational projects as assigned. Covers the reference desk at the Customer Service Center as assigned by the Coordinator of Research and Instruction.
• Performs liaison duties to one or more departments at Liberty University as assigned, which include bibliographic instruction sessions as requested, development and maintenance of online research guides, and handling of research questions by email or phone.
Participates in regularly scheduled departmental or library staff meetings, and in any other committee meetings as needed.
• Demonstrates the ability to work in and with diverse populations.
• Remains abreast of existing and emerging technologies, processes, products, services and leading industry performance benchmarks.
• Works effectively as a team member, embracing and fostering LU’s mission.

Minimum Qualifications

• MLS degree from an ALA -accredited program, or equivalent
• Commitment to Christian higher education and endorsement of Liberty University’s doctrinal statement
• Experience with integrated library systems and electronic resource management functions
• Familiarity with current and emerging cataloging standards related to RDA, MARC, BIBFRAME, linked data, LC authorities and RDF
• Ability to effectively utilize Microsoft Office software
• Commitment to professional development
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Ability and willingness to work with colleagues in collaborative and team environments, as well as independently
• Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills

Preferred Qualifications

• Second Master’s degree
• Previous academic library experience in acquisitions, collection management, or electronic resources management
• Familiarity with scripting languages and/or tools for data manipulation

Work Hours

Business hours with occasional evening and weekend events.
