Summary :
The Department of Behavioral and Social Sciences (DBSS) at the University of Houston College of Medicine (UHCOM) seeks an educator and researcher to join our mission of training graduates in biopsychosocial and advanced health social behavioral models to improve care for the underserved. A PhD in Sociology, significant scholarly and funding record in social health behavior research, and prior medical school teaching experience are required. The ideal candidate will be a nationally recognized sociological researcher who is committed to bringing their body of knowledge to directly teaching medical students. Advancing the content and pedagogy of incorporating the behavioral sciences including sociology into our curriculum is a goal of this department.

We anticipate a late spring, early summer 2021 start date. At this time, all faculty appointments in the College of Medicine are non-tenure track. The College of Medicine anticipates being able to make tenure track positions available for application in the future.

UH is a Carnegie Tier One Research University. We welcomed our first class of thirty medical students in July of 2020. DBSS is one of four departments in the medical school. Faculty represent psychology, psychiatry, anthropology, medical humanities, reflective practice, and compassionate care.

The responsibilities are planned for this position include: curriculum development and teaching, service, and research. Proportion of effort for teaching and curricular innovation is expected to be approximately 50% and address three main areas: Develop and delivery of state-of-the-art sociological knowledge into our medical student education at a level that is noteworthy nationally. This should include the etiology, prevention and treatment of behaviorally laden illness and disease, and social and health behavior theories and mediational processes and their application to the contexts and needs of health disparity populations. We seek to prepare our graduates to have therapeutic, meaningful, effective and satisfying interactions with patients, therefore candidates should bring deep understanding and teaching experience needed to encourage compassion, reflective practice, self-understanding and skillful doctor patient interactions. We are particularly interested in innovatively advancing our curricula to enable our graduates to understand the processes of social injustice and potentially mitigate them clinically and in the community.

Ten percent of responsibilities will comprise service including mentoring of faculty research, DBSS and UHCOM committees, and regional and national leadership activities.

The balance of your responsibilities will include behavioral science research consistent with the DBSS mission.

Specific duties include the following:

Primary Responsibilities:
Educational Mission (50% Effort)
• Develop the delivery of state-of-the-art sociological knowledge into our medical student education at a level noteworthy nationally.
• Contribute to selected Integrated Clinical Cases that will illustrate medical sociology principles. Similarly, contribute to Clinical Focus Sessions, which are one-week mini courses providing in depth examination of access issues, population medicine, pain, substance use and end of life care.
• Contribute to Physicians, Patients and Populations (a course that covers clinical skills, evidence-based medicine, health systems science, and interpersonal relationships), and Longitudinal Clinical Experiences.
• Facilitate and develop or co-develop trainee reflective and skills building activities for professionalism, well-being and relationship centered care.
• Based on discipline specific knowledge, develop advanced elective and/or mentored research experiences.
• Contribute to and potentially lead competitive applications for sponsored curriculum innovation projects.

Research Effort (40% or more depending on applicant’s current research enterprise).
• Demonstrate research productivity in an area consistent with medical sociology
• Integrate social and behavioral science theory to systematically design interventions and use state-of-the-art analytical approaches to assess their effectiveness.
• Contribute to and lead competitive applications for sponsored projects.
• Maintain external funding for research effort.
• Collaborate on behavioral science translational or community engaged research.

Service Effort (10%)
• Serve on DBSS and UHCOM educational, research and other committees.
• Provide research mentorship or educational sessions on discipline related methodologies for faculty.
• Serve and provide regional and national leadership in research, and the medical education of your discipline.

Rank and salary commensurate with academic achievements and experience.

Qualifications :

Minimum Qualifications
• PhD in Sociology
• Direct experience developing curriculum and teaching for teaching medical students or residents
• Must be highly experienced in the educational areas described earlier and show meaningful scholarly achievements related to education
• Evidence of exemplary social science research leadership and productivity.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience as an active part of a diverse and inclusive group of faculty, staff, and student leaders focused on behavioral science training.
• Experience teaching or implementing evidence-based approaches to care
• Proficiency with an asynchronous learning platform
• Bi-lingual in Spanish, Vietnamese, Arabic, or Chinese
