WHAT YOU'LL DO

Perform skilled and technical duties related to the construction, development, and storage of stage costumes for performing arts productions.

The current vacancy is a full time position (11 mos/year, 40 hrs/week) located at Ventura College.

Established in 1925, Ventura College was one of the first community colleges in California and currently has an enrollment of 14,500 students. Located approximately 60 miles north of Los Angeles and 30 miles south of Santa Barbara, the 112-acre campus is set in the rolling hills of Ventura - so close to the ocean that there is a clear view of the Channel Islands from several spots on campus.

This recruitment is being conducted to establish a list of eligible candidates that will be used to fill district-wide, current and upcoming, bilingual and non-bilingual, temporary and regular vacancies for the duration of the list, not to exceed one year.

Representative Duties
Design, build, rent, or pull and prepare costumes from existing inventory for performing arts productions. E

Oversee and participate in the construction, fabrication, alteration and fitting of costumes for performing arts productions; take cast measurements; purchase appropriate fabric and/or clothing items; draft or modify patterns; cut out fabric and perform muslin and/or fabric fittings; construct costumes. E

Meet with theatrical production directors to discuss costume requirements for the production season. E

Read and interpret playwright's intent and characters' motivations for costume design; research and present historical style and manners by sketching or drawing designs in color. E

Create and revise costume plots and patterns. E

Order and purchase items needed for costumes and constructing costumes, including supplies and equipment. E

Monitor, assess, and assist in development and control of budget for costumes and related materials; maintain records of expenditures. E

Organize and supervise costume crews; fit costume and dress participants at rehearsals and performances. E

Issue and receive costumes, accessories, and stage properties; store and maintain inventories of costumes and accessories; maintain inventory records and prepare periodic inventory reports; ensure security of theatre storage areas. E

Oversee students and student workers who perform tasks related to the operation and maintenance of costume equipment, materials, and accessories. E

Ensure proper maintenance and operation of costume shop equipment; make minor repairs to equipment and arrange repairs as needed. E

E = Essential Duties

Minimum Qualifications
Completion of two years of coursework or training in Costume Design, Fashion Design, Theater Arts or a related field AND two years of experience involving the construction, fabrication, alteration, and fitting of costumes for use in performing arts productions.

Valid California driver's license or the ability to obtain a California driver license within six months of appointment.

Supplemental Information
EXAMINATION AND SELECTION PROCESS:
This is an examination open to the public and current district employees seeking a promotional opportunity. To ensure consideration, please submit your application materials by May 30, 2021.

The examination process may consist of any of the following components:

A) Costume Design Portfolio Evaluation = Qualifying (pass/fail)
B) Technical Interview = 100% weighting on final score

Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications stated on the job bulletin by the filing deadline in order to move forward in the testing process. Those candidates who meet the minimum qualifications may have their application materials reviewed during a Costume Design Portfolio Evaluation. The eight (8) candidates with the highest passing scores on the evaluation(s) will be invited to the technical interview.

TECHNICAL INTERVIEW DATE RANGE AND LOCATION:
Date Range: Monday, June 14, 2021 - Friday, June 18, 2021
Location: The Technical Interview will be conducted remotely, using Zoom. In order to participate in the interview, you must have access to a computer with a camera, microphone, speakers, and a reliable connection to the internet.

ELIGIBILITY LIST:
Upon completion of the examination, the eligibility list will be compiled by combining the final examination score with applicable seniority and veteran's credits, if any. The candidates will be ranked according to their total score on the eligibility list. Certification will be made from the highest three ranks of the eligibility list. This eligibility list will be used to fill current vacancies for up to one year from the date of the technical interview.

PROBATIONARY PERIOD:
All appointments made from eligibility lists for initial appointment or for promotion, with certain exceptions, shall be probationary for a period of six (6) months or one hundred thirty (130) days of paid service, whichever is longer. Classified management, police, and designated executive classifications shall be probationary for a period of one (1) year of paid service from initial appointment or promotion.
