Job Details
Dartmouth College is seeking an Associate General Counsel to join its Office of General Counsel to advise and represent Dartmouth on a broad array of higher education legal issues, with a primary focus on student affairs and secondary focus on labor and employment. This counsel will devote attention to student-related issues, including student employment, academic or other misconduct, Greek life and other student affinity groups, and alleged discrimination or harassment, disability issues, sexual assault, Title IX, and diversity, equity and inclusion, relating to students, staff and faculty.
Responsibilities will include advice to Dartmouth officials and committees, and representation in judicial and administrative forums, litigation management, policy formulation and training, and oversight of outside counsel. The successful candidate will: analyze and manage complex matters in a timely effective manner; exercise excellent judgment; communicate effectively with high-level Dartmouth officials and stakeholders; manage outside counsel in a cost-effective manner; demonstrate initiative to identify and address programmatic and operational issues; and advance the mission of Dartmouth and the OGC to foster diversity, equity, and inclusivity in access to opportunities both within OGC and throughout the larger Dartmouth community. The new Associate General Counsel will also be a collaborating team member with all members of the OGC and will provide advice and legal representation in other areas as needed from time to time.
Minimum Qualifications
• JD from nationally recognized law school with excellent academic preparation in law school and undergraduate studies.
• Membership in the New Hampshire bar or eligibility for admission within 12 months of employment.
• Five or more years of law practice experience in areas related to the above responsibilities.
Preferred Qualifications
• Seven to ten or more years of law practice in an academic environment or in a higher education practice at a law firm or related setting, demonstrating continuous growth and a demonstrated record of independent judgment, in representing and advising sophisticated clients with complex administrative proceedings or litigation.
• Excellent analytical, advocacy, problem-solving, and case management skills.
• Excellent writing and client communications skills.
• Ability to work effectively and collaboratively with diverse client representatives in complex environment.
• Demonstrated judgment and discretion.
