General Summary/Purpose

The Sr. Research Assistant will be responsible for overseeing data collection and conducting qualitative analysis for grant funded research studies under the direction of the Principal Investigator in the Department of Genetic Medicine, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. The ideal candidate will have expertise in computational analysis and the ability to apply statistical algorithms to a range of large datasets. A strong background in computation and mathematics, the ability to incorporate innovative methods, and data structuring skills, are high priorities for success in the position.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Analysis and download of whole exome sequencing data and subsequent association with downstream phenotypes;
  • Implementation of a software pipeline to call mitochondrial genotypes;
  • Oversee continuous quality control of data collection and analysis for assigned study;
  • Active collaboration with the Principal Investigator to design analyses of study data for papers, grants, and presentations;
  • Assist in developing, writing and implementing statistical analysis plans;
  • Review literature and implement analytic methods based on results of literature search;
  • Train new laboratory staff and work with graduate students on analytical methods;
  • Collaborate with internal and external statisticians regarding study designs and analyses.
  • Other duties related to data collection, analysis, and method implementation as needed.
Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in related discipline.
  • 2 years of related experience.
  • Additional graduate level education may substitute for required experience to the extent permitted by theJHU equivalency formula.
* JHU Equivalency Formula:30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job. *

Preferred Qualifications

  • MPH or MS in relevant field preferred.

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of computation and mathematics and the ability to learn new techniques rapidly incorporating innovative methods.

Physical requirements for the job:

Sitting in a normal seated position for extended periods of time; Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction; Finger dexterity to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand or arm, for example, using a keyboard; Communication skills using the spoken word; Ability to see and hear within normal parameters; Ability to move about workspace.

Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
