General Summary/Purpose

The Department of Pediatrics and Division of Endocrinology and Diabetes is seeking a Research Technologist under general supervision of Dr. Janet Crane.Dr. Crane’s research program spans pediatric, endocrinology, and orthopedic translational and clinical research projects to understand the cause of skeletal disorders (i.e. osteoporosis in childhood, rare bone diseases, and degenerative disc disease) and identify and evaluate treatment targets and efficacy.

This position will include clinical and translational research projects. The position requires basic knowledge of applicable laboratory procedures, tests, techniques and terminology related to bone biology and endocrinology.The candidate’s responsibilities will include abstraction of clinical data into research database, maintenance of mouse colony, performing experiments on animal or human fluids/tissues, assisting with purchasing of equipment, and ordering of supplies. The candidate will also make sure that the lab complies with Hopkins rules and regulations and keep lab protocols updated.

The work requires basic use of scientific methods, procedures and techniques gained through previous training and experience, analytical skills, and ability to trouble-shoot situations.Effective communication and interpersonal skills are critical as the position includes interaction with patients, including children and families.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

    Work requires basic use of scientific methods, procedures and techniques, such as safe handling of human and animal biospecimens, processing, immunostaining, protein analysis by Western blot and/or ELISA, flow cytometry, cell and tissue culture,PCR, and RNA/DNA extraction and analysis. Applicants must be familiar with the operation of basic laboratory equipment and with sterile technique. Follow established procedures or protocols to manage mouse colonies, maintain logs, and genotype analyses. Collect data from patient medical records and questionnaires, prepare and code data entry, enter and maintain databases. Monitors data quality and accuracy as required by research protocol. May run pre-established routine queries. Ensure that case files and accompanying paperwork are organized and current. Complete all training and certification requirements for required research procedures in a timely manner. Other duties as assigned by faculty/PI’s.
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in biological sciences, chemistry, physics or related field required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Some related post-undergraduate work experience preferred.
  • Prior laboratory experience
  • Additionalrelevantlaboratory experience acquired through extracurricular activities or summer employment is very desirable.Molecular and Cellular Biology and Biochemistry are highly desirable.
Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of basic computer programs (Excel, etc.); knowledge of policies, procedures and standard laboratory practices necessary to conduct the normal function of the lab. Ability to complete duties and responsibilities with limited supervision. Ability to make decisions and establish work priorities on procedure-oriented operations at the direction of faculty/PI and/or lab manager. Working knowledge of basic lab equipment such as: centrifuge, pH Meter, analytical balance, incubator, light microscope, utilization of laminar flow hood, and other equipment as needed.Detail-oriented and conscientious. Basic computer skills: Internet and email software, spreadsheet software, and word processing.

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
