Admission Job Description Job Summary

Initiate and oversee public relations, marketing and efforts directed particularly towards the recruitment and selection of students of color who are US citizens, undocumented or permanent residents of the United States. Responsible for developing a strategic plan to ensure students of color are well-represented in the entering class. Coordinate relevant efforts across the college regarding the enrollment of students of color.

Take appropriate actions to support a diverse workforce and participate in the College's efforts to create a respectful, inclusive, and welcoming work environment.

This position has been regraded as a Grade H.

Essential Functions

50% Recruitment

Coordinate the recruitment of students of color. Develop and maintain a network of recruitment sources that extend beyond traditional secondary schools. Expand and nurture the partnerships with agencies and community based organizations that work with students of color. Develop targeting student of color efforts involving faculty, students, staff and alumnae. Collaborate with coordinator of Alumnae Volunteer Program and Transfer Coordinator to identify and attract under-represented students. Plan and execute approximately eight weeks of travel to recruit students.

20% Supervision and Program oversight

Supervise an assistant director and admission counselor as part of the Access Recruitment Team. Serve as a liaison to the Offices of Multicultural Affairs and Office of Inclusion and Equity as an active participant in campus organizations and events addressing issues especially relevant to students, faculty and alumnae of color. Develop and maintain partnerships with alumnae relations office in support of multicultural recruitment. Current on-campus and virtual program responsibilities include coordinating Discovery Weekend admitted student program, and oversight of the virtual and on-campus Women of Distinction recruitment program and virtual and on-campus Bridging Access to Smith, a program for directors of community based organizations, when these programs occur.

20% Reading and Selection

Read and evaluate admissibility of candidates for admission to the college. Interview and evaluate prospective applicants in person and virtually. Lead on-campus and virtual information sessions.

Other Functions

10% Administrative

Coordinate admission officer recruitment travel. Train new staff, monitor itineraries and expense reports and consult with travelers when problems or concerns arise. Work with off-site travel agency in containing travel costs. Consult with senior staff for strategic travel planning and in managing annual travel budget. Handle correspondence with students, parents, counselors, and other constituencies. Keep abreast of pertinent developments at Smith College, in higher education, and in the field of professional admission work. Cooperate with other administrators of the College where necessary, especially Student Financial Services, Office of Multicultural Affairs and the Alumnae Relations office. Supervise an assistant director of admission and admission counselor, jointly supervise an administrative assistant. Serves on the admission senior team. Perform related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications (knowledge, skills, education, experience, certifications, licenses)

Bachelor's degree; minimum three years of experience in admission or related field with evidence of progressively increasing responsibility. Experience working with multicultural communities in the United States required.

Experience working with individuals from diverse backgrounds.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience working with multicultural recruitment process a plus. Supervisory experience a plus.


Strong communication, counseling, organizational, administrative and supervisory skills. The ability to effectively and efficiently develop and execute several key projects simultaneously. Must be able to work independently, have strong organizational and planning skills, excellent writing and oral communication skills, strong analytical and computer expertise including familiarity with MS Office suite and Slate CRM. Excellent interpersonal skills and be able to effectively interact with people of all backgrounds. Ability to use sound judgement creativity and vision.

Additional Information

Valid drivers license required. Must be eligible to obtain a passport. Willing to work some nights and weekends as needed.
