Walden University seeks dynamic, engaged and supportive doctoral faculty research mentors that have strong communication and learning-relationship skills for this part-time position in the . Key responsibilities of this position are teach undergraduate American Sign Language Course and to mentor doctoral students through the dissertation process as a subject/content expert who may be either a chair or second member of dissertation committees, and to engage and support doctoral students as emerging scholar-practitioners.

What to expect as a Walden contributing faculty member:
Faculty members educate Walden University students by effectively using online technology and resources to provide an engaging and supportive student experience. Faculty members are expected to share their knowledge and give relevant, actionable feedback in carefully formulated timely communication to students. This is accomplished in a student-centric learning environment that is respectful, collaborative and follows Walden University and program specific guidelines.

General Expectations Include:

  • Supportive engagement at all times – build positive rapport, openness, trust, mutual inquiry and listening to students to help them learn, discover and apply research skills.
  • Effective online communications to maintain teaching and social presence and to stimulate critical thinking and “learning to learn” skills


  • Doctoral Student Research Mentoring
    Faculty research mentors are assigned to work as part of a committee team and may work one-on-one with students to help them meet the research requirements of their doctoral degree. Walden dissertation faculty support quality progress by developing a respectful and considerate relationship with each student and their fellow committee members, that is rooted in deep listening and engagement.
    Subject Matter/Content Expert

    When a research mentor is the second member of a committee (not Chair), they are expected to engage, monitor, refine, and assess the progress of the capstone research from start to finish as the subject/content expert, and to provide timely, actionable feedback, assessment, and evaluation of each student's work within the research process (to the Chair and/or the student).

    Doctoral Student Research Mentoring: Research Design & Methodology Expert

    When a research mentor is the second member of a committee (not Chair), as research design and methodology expert, they are expected to engage, monitor, refine, and assess the progress of the capstone research from start to finish as the design and methods expert, and to provide timely, relevant, actionable feedback, assessment, and evaluation of each student's work within the research process (to the Chair and/or the student).
    Chair Responsibilities:
    Faculty mentors who are who are assigned as Chair, are responsible for interacting with, and providing academic and professional guidance to, students on an ongoing basis within the Blackboard LMS platform. The committee chair is expected to ensure that their mentees have an approved term-plan each term, and that they engage and support students within the asynchronous learning spaces to foster quality work and progress; to respond to questions and comments in the course within 48 hours, and to engage students within the course a minimum of 4 days per week. Faculty Chairs are to provide grades and actionable, supportive feedback to students through Blackboard, and to assess final term plan progress. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
    Specific training will be provided from Walden University in the techniques teaching, use of an electronic learning platform, specifics of the policies, procedures and degree programs of the School or College in which they are going to teach, socialization into the Walden University culture, assessment of academic integrity of student work (including use of www.turnitin.com), and research supervision of theses and dissertations.

    Availability
    Walden expects faculty to be reasonably accessible to students. Faculty members are expected to be available to students outside the course discussion board and in addition to providing substantive feedback on assignments and postings. Faculty members will publish their availability to students through course syllabi, instructor information in the classroom, and/or other appropriate documents. Regular and predictable availability, such as online office hours required.

    Residencies
    Faculty Members may be required to attend Residencies held domestically or internationally, (Part-time faculty may, but are not required to attend), where they will teach intensives and colloquia, and facilitate school and university-wide discussions.

    Faculty members are required to have an adequate computer to handle an electronic learning platform, keyboard, pointing device, and computer monitor. All other tools are knowledge-based or training-based through Walden University. The Faculty Member must be able to use Microsoft Office products (MS Word, MS Excel, and MS PowerPoint), and must have reliable Internet access as well as alternate access in cases where primary access becomes unavailable.EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
  • Earned doctorate in the field of study or closely related field (or recognized by a country’s Ministry of Education or Counsel of Higher Education).
  • Fluent in American Sign Language and familiarity with the needs of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community. Deaf or Hard of Hearing with American Sign Language as First Language preferred
  • Candidates should possess a significant record of intellectual and professional contributions to the field of [school specific], including experience in the practice of [field of study]
  • Three to five years of teaching experience at the degree level of the program is preferred
  • Two years or more of online or technology-enabled instruction experience preferred.
  • Commitment to advocating for the learning and development needs of students earning their degrees in a distance learning environment
  • Teaching, advising and mentoring; commitment to the promotion of applied research and the recruitment and development of a diverse faculty; excellent leadership, communication, team, and human relations skills.
  • Experience with distance learning preferred

  • LICENSURE and/or CERTIFICATION

    Faculty Members must be appropriately credentialed, possess an earned degree from an accredited institution or recognized by a country's ministry of education in the discipline being taught, and may be expected to be licensed or license-eligible in order to teach in specific programs. Faculty Members must maintain their licenses and any appropriate certifications in order to continue to teach at Walden University. Faculty Members are also expected to maintain currency with research by reviewing articles, journals, and presentations. If participating in research, the Faculty Member may publish and acknowledge Walden University.
