Mission or Goal of Unit

The primary mission of the School of Dentistry is to educate practitioners of Dentistry capable of meeting the general oral health care needs of the communities they serve. Integral parts of the mission are research and other scholarly activity, patient care, and service and leadership in dental education and organized dentistry, and collaboration and participation with other units with VCU and VCU Health Systems.

Chief purpose of this position in support of above mission or goal

The Department of Oral Diagnostic Dentistry in the VCU School of Dentistry invites candidates to apply for the teaching and research faculty position of Oral Facial Pain Dentist. This faculty position will provide teaching, research, scholarly activities, and patient care in the area of oral facial pain and oral-diagnostics. The Oral Facial Pain Dentist will instruct students and residents to manage patients. They will also diagnose, train and manage cases. Additionally, the incumbent will participate with other units with VCU and collaborate with VCU Health Systems to provide outstanding patient care and continuing education for VCU Dental students and residents.

Position Responsibilities

1. Teaching:
Teaching and course development and directorship in the area of oral-facial pain and oral medicine to include integration of biomedical and behavioral sciences associated with pain and pain management. Teaching venues include clinical, classroom, small group, and online. Faculty members are expected to teach in an integrated curriculum system that includes baccalaureate, graduate, and professional education. Teaching across traditional departmental lines, graduate programs and in multidisciplinary teams is required. Faculty is expected to foster transformative learning that is informed by interdisciplinary and translational research, teaching, scholarship, and creative expression.

SOD Strategic Plan 1.1.1: To develop and maintain academic and clinical curricula that reflect evidence-based advances in research, technology and changes in the oral and general health needs of the population.

SOD Strategic Plan 1.1.2: To prepare students to self-assess their learning outcomes and allow them opportunities to individualize their preparation based on areas of strength and interest and future career plans.

2. Research:
The faculty member will be encouraged to have an established research agenda and potential for scholarship or creative expression to complement and expand existing expertise in the department, school or university. Individual or collaborative research in the areas related to cancer, bio-engineering, microbiology/immunology, public health, and/or behavioral sciences is preferred.

SOD Strategic Plan 2.1.1: To define, establish and fund graduate programs that define the School of Dentistry as a national center for specialized oral health-related research.

SOD Strategic Plan 2.2.1: To achieve significant research advances by the School of Dentistry in the next five years.

3. Service:
The faculty member will be expected to serve on school and university committees and hold membership in appropriate local, state and national organizations appropriate for their areas of expertise. Membership in the American Dental Association is highly preferred. The faculty member will be expected to seek local, state, and/or national service opportunities.

SOD Strategic Plan 3.2: The School of Dentistry will identify dentistry-related opportunities for community service by faculty, staff and students and encourage their involvement.

4. Clinical:
The faculty member will establish and maintain a practice for patients with oral-facial pain and oral medicine. The faculty member will be part of a multi-faceted approach to patient care.

SOD Strategic Plan 3.1: The School of Dentistry will be known for the high quality and value of its patient services, including undergraduate, graduate and faculty practice.

5. Other:
Faculty will have duties appropriate to the position rank and will include items such as directing and administration of clinical and didactic courses for students and residents. The faculty member is expected to teach in an integrated curriculum system that includes baccalaureate, graduate, and professional education. Teaching across traditional departmental lines and in multidisciplinary teams is required. Faculty is expected to foster transformative learning that is informed by interdisciplinary and translational research, teaching, scholarship, and creative expression.

Required Qualifications

• Eligible for dental license in Virginia

• DMD / DDS degree

• Advanced training in treatment of Oral Facial Pain

• Board Eligible or certified for the American Board of Oral Facial Pain

• Minimum of 2 years of clinical experience in oral medicine, oral-facial pain and related conditions

• Demonstrated ability to teach [oral medicine and oral facial temporomandibular disorder ( TMD ) pain curriculum], or to acquire and develop such ability that incorporates adult learning theory, evidence-based oral health care, innovation in student learning, and critical thinking

• Demonstrate the ability to contribute to and participate in a humanistic environment of learning, discover, and demonstrate the ability to adapt to change and embrace modern technologies

• Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU

Preferred Qualifications

• Teaching experience in a dental school setting or with dental students and dental residents

• Published clinical or research articles

• Training and experience in management of temporomandibular disorder ( TMD ) patients and facial pain; clinical experience in Dental Sleep Medicine and Burning Mouth Syndrome; background in research, and/or Ph.D.
