Department Summary

Position Summary
The Knight Campus Assistant/Associate Director of Research Administration (ADRA) serves as a member of the leadership team and provides vision, support, and leadership on all matters related to pre-and post-award administration of sponsored projects, innovation/entrepreneurship administration, and special research project management. This includes overseeing all activities related to the full lifecycle of sponsored projects administration including identification of funding sources, proposal submission, contract negotiation, sub-award issuance, and post-award administration (both financial and non-financial) related to funding provided in the form of gifts, grants, cooperative agreements, and contracts from external/internal funding sources that provide support for research in the Knight Campus. Additionally, the ADRA will build-out, test, and implement new workflows, processes, policies, and protocols for the Knight Campus research administration portfolio.

The ADRA will ensure all Knight Campus sponsored projects are managed in compliance with agency and university requirements, will coordinate and respond to internal and external audits of award-related transactions and reporting, and will manage the development of trainings and orientation on a variety of research administration topics for Knight Campus PIs.

This ADRA provides leadership for outstanding customer service at all levels of the organization, balancing service with compliance. This position will identify goals for future organizational performance in research administration and in supervising the growing research administration team, will oversee assignment of tasks to personnel and assess workload as appropriate. The ADRA will communicate goals to employees and inspire employees to achieve the Knight Campus mission. Additionally, this position exercises authority for unit policy and procedures and operational decisions regarding research and innovation administration for the Knight Campus.

This opening will be filled at the Assistant or Associate Director level based on finalist qualifications and experience.

Minimum Requirements
Assistant Director
  • Bachelor's degree OR an equivalent combination of skills and experience; AND
  • Five years of progressively responsible experience within the field of sponsored research administration with an emphasis in financial management and internal controls; AND
  • Two years of supervisory experience including hiring and performance management

    Associate Director
  • Bachelor's degree OR an equivalent combination of skills and experience; AND
  • Seven years of progressively responsible experience within the field of sponsored research administration with an emphasis in financial management and internal controls; AND
  • Three years of supervisory experience including hiring and performance management

    ***Experience may be earned concurrently

    Professional Competencies
  • Demonstrated strong written and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with faculty, staff and students from a variety of diverse backgrounds
  • Advanced knowledge of and abilities related to interpreting and applying sponsor requirements, including federal regulations such as uniform guidance, federal cost accounting standards, and other administrative rules
  • Demonstrated leadership and mentorship skills

    Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced degree in applicable field such as Research Administration, Business, Finance, Law, Public Policy, etc.
  • Professional certifications in research administration or financial administration.
  • Experience managing sponsored projects administration including pre-award and post-award.
  • Experience with project management of systems implementations and multi-institutional collaborations.
  • Proficiency in the use of databases and electronic systems, including the abilities to evaluate systems needs and assist in the development of improved accounting and management systems.
