The Registered Nurse provides primary health care to students in the Center for Health and Wellness. The RN provides services within the RN scope of practice regulations defined by Massachusetts regulation: MGL; Chapter 112: Sections 80 & 80A.The RN will practice according to the Emerson College mission statement by providing health education and promotion for students as well as welcoming a creative environment bringing about innovation, depth and diversity to healthcare.

This is a FT M-F (36.25hr/week) benefitted 12 month position, must have availability to work until 7pm one night a week, as we offer extended hours for students two nights a week.

Essential Functions of the Role:
  • Provide initial assessment, triage or treatment of basic nursing care according to departmental policies, scope of practice and nursing process in accordance with MA RN licensure. Refer cases needing further medical attention and intervention to the appropriate APC or MD.
  • Assist with primary care measures to optimize health and abilities as well as prevent or alleviate illness or injury.
  • Phone triage and the ability to develop a plan of care recommending interventions, when necessary, which are appropriate and have attainable outcomes.
  • Student education, advocacy, outreach, and participation in health promotion activities
  • Injection and immunization review and administration, assist with immunization compliance and health screening requirements
  • Provide appropriate referrals for students requiring medical care to a consulting physician, area urgent care centers, STD testing or medical specialists in the community as needed
  • Perform and assist with phlebotomy, acquiring health histories, vitals, strep testing, urine dips, pregnancy tests, laboratory controls testing, etc.
  • Provide clinical support and assist with ordering supplies and medications.
  • Responds to students in a timely manner to questions concerning symptoms, treatment, test results, medications, etc.
  • Work with providers to relay lab and test results, make appointments, and call back students.

Other Responsibilities:
  • Phone and on-site triage assessment of students presenting/calling with non-emergency health concerns
  • May participate in the development or implementation of educational outreach activities
  • Document medical visits, follow -up test results within the students' EHR on a timely basis
  • Communicate with students through the online secure health portal.
  • Communicate regularly with center staff on clinical and administrative matters and enhance departmental collaboration and quality of care provided to students by attending scheduled staff and clinical team meetings, case conferences and individual supervision as assigned


Qualifications:
  • BSN required. Graduate from an accredited school/college of nursing with current Massachusetts registered nurse licensure in good standing or eligibility for licensure in MA.
  • Minimum of three years of ambulatory care experience required. Experience with telephone and direct triage, phlebotomy, immunizations, PPD skin testing and communicable disease exposures.
  • Prior experience with EMR. Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment and prioritize multiple tasks.
  • Must be able to communicate clearly in oral and written communications.


Preferred Qualifications:

Prior experience in college health, culturally diverse settings, and transgender and LGBTQ community care are preferred. Prior participation in health outreach, promotion and advocacy activities. Knowledge of risk communicable diseases, prevention, guidelines & isolation.
