Kessler Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for persons with disabilities, is recruiting an established scientist in stroke rehabilitation or a related field to lead the Center for Stroke Rehabilitation Research (CSRR).

Research in the CSRR focuses on understanding complex brain systems crucial to spatial processing, attention, speech, and language; how these systems are affected by stroke; and how behavioral and physiological treatments can be designed and used to address these impairments, reduce deficits, and improve functional outcomes. Its two laboratories are as follows:

  • Spatial Attention, Awareness, and Ability Laboratory, led by Peii (Peggy) Chen, PhD, Senior Research Scientist
  • Neurolinguistics and Brain Connectivity Laboratory, led by Olga Boukrina, PhD, Research Scientist, Dr. Olga Boukrina.

Key responsibilities will include engaging in primary research, directing research activities of others (managing a staff of approximately 12), developing and managing budget, authoring publications, delivering presentations (national/international), and facilitating related collaborative efforts with Kessler Foundation’s other research centers and with other research institutions.

The successful candidate will be recommended for a faculty appointment in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School, and will have a close affiliation with Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation (KIR), and access to its patient population, and, if applicable, will maintain clinical privileges and responsibilities. KIR is the largest and most comprehensive medical rehabilitation hospital in New Jersey, with over 5,000 admissions per year (including approximately 2,000 stroke patients), and is consistently ranked among the nation's top rehabilitation hospitals.

Required qualifications

  • PhD, MD, MD/PhD, or equivalent doctoral degree;
  • Significant experience in related research, with a successful history of peer-reviewed scientific publications;
  • Demonstrated success in achieving grant funding (including federal agencies such as NIH);
  • An active stroke research program with current federal and/or private multi-year funding;
  • Strong leadership, mentoring, and teambuilding skills;
  • Capacity to foster interdisciplinary collaborations;
  • Ability to set and direct the vision for growing the Center’s research program.

To apply

Please submit CV, cover letter, statement of research accomplishments and plans (vision for CSRR and short- and long-term goals), NIH Biosketch, and at least three professional references to career@kesslerfoundation.org .
