The ITS unit exists to provide comprehensive information technology delivery and support in the form of personnel, desktop and mobile computing, multi-media equipment, hardware, network infrastructure, software, telephone, and network cabling services to the University community.   This unit is the centralized computing services for the University.
Network and Server Systems, a division of Information Technology Services (ITS), exists to provide the central administration and support for network, server, software, and storage infrastructure at Colorado State University Pueblo. NSS consults with the campus community to discover and meet the computing-infrastructure needs of the University and makes recommendations to facilitate these requests.  NSS also provides information security and disaster recovery services to insure reliability and integrity of the University's data infrastructure from theft and loss.  NSS aids upper administration in setting policy to help prevent the mishandling of sensitive information stored and/or transmitted using University-maintained data infrastructure.


 Description of Job: The position also provides consultation and guidance to campus users and departments to determine best possible technological solutions for their objectives, budget and goals that also achieve the greater campus-wide requirements regarding security controls, standardization, software vendor relationships, compatibility with existing infrastructure, support requirements and sustainability.
This position will:
  • serve on technical teams and occasionally as a team lead on projects as assigned
  • recommend needed redesigns of core enterprise systems and identifying appropriate implementation steps within the project management life cycle
  • ensure continual innovation by assisting project teams with research, investigation, and analysis of the feasibility of system requirements
  • have experience in working independently toward common team goals
  • assist other ITS team members in project management and reporting
  • provide technical support within the NSS department and to the rest of IT and the greater campus
  • participate in the development of system specifications, identification of methods and solutions to provide a high-level of service to the customers of the department
Technical duties include design, implementation and management of Microsoft Active Directory services, File and Print services, Microsoft Exchange, Microsoft Office 365 services administration, Domain Name Services, administration of campus IP address space; design, implementation and management of the virtual computing infrastructure including, but not limited to, VMware virtualization technologies, servers (both virtual and physical), enterprise-grade storage area networks, database systems, firewalls, switches, routers, routing protocols, peering with other entities, and wireless access points; Maintains and supports disaster recovery backup procedures and insures the integrity of the University's central data. Team participation, collaboration and communication with team members and the campus community is required to keep continuity of support and maintain services.
Occasional night and weekend hours are required to assist with system upgrades, maintenance and troubleshooting of mission-critical systems.  The position reports directly to the Manager of Network and System Services.

Primary Duties

Server Environment Systems Administration and Automation
  • Administration of authentication and authorization (Microsoft Active Directory) services.  This includes but is not limited to account generation, group management, and rights management.
  • Administration and maintenance of Microsoft File and Print Services, Digital Document Storage system, and other end user accessible systems with the collaboration of peers.
  • Participate in the installation, maintenance, and monitoring of all automation for related systems.
  • Applying operating system updates, patches, and configuration changes. Administration and maintenance of virtual server infrastructure.
  • System Design, Management and Monitoring
  • Participate in the installation, maintenance, and monitoring of all servers, storage and network-attached devices and associated software or services to ensure acceptable performance and uptime.
  • Design and produce reports on server, storage, and network performance metrics to determine problems and replacement-cycle needs. 
  • Assist in the analysis, design, and implementation of network, server and storage solutions serving CSU Pueblo and affiliated entities.
  • Provide management of said systems with optimal regard toward cost, standardization, project requirements, established theory and compatibility with existing systems.
  • Back-End Server and Infrastructure Support
  • Lead in the administration, installation, maintenance, and monitoring of all CSU Pueblo backend web servers and related systems.
  • This includes but is not limited to the CMS, portal, development, and auxiliary web servers. Assist with the administration, maintenance, and coordination of SAML integrations.
  • Participate in the assignment and administration of the CSU Pueblo IP address space. 
  • Participate in the administration of routing protocols and internal static routes and peering with other entities. 
  • Troubleshoot and resolve server, storage, and network issues in collaboration with the Help Desk and other peers.
  • Documentation
  • Assist in the design of strategies, processes, guidelines, and rules for operational use of the mission-critical central computing technologies of the University.
  • This includes imparting learned information to managers, peers, and users for the purpose of system use. 
  • Responsible for documenting the configuration of the CSU Pueblo server, storage, and network systems.
  • Security Issues
  • Assists in coordinating security-related activities such as operating system patches, data backups, network account creation and maintenance, system audits, etc.
  • Ensure that all upgrades to hardware and software are implemented in a timely manner, staying current with released, while maintaining the integrity of the existing technology environment.
  • Remote Support
    • Travel to off-site University locations for support, maintenance, and/or installation of server, storage, and network equipment
    Ancillary Duties
    • Assists department in special projects as necessary.  Performs other duties and projects as assigned by supervisor or division.


     Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights: Minimum Qualifications
    • Graduation from an accredited college or university with an Associate’s degree in computer information systems, computer science, technology support or related field.
    • At least three years' experience in supporting a complex data center and network infrastructure
    • Extensive knowledge and/or experience working with Microsoft Windows servers and Active Directory domains
    • Previous knowledge and/or experience working with VMware vSphere in an enterprise environment
    • Previous experience working with TCP/IP protocol and Ethernet networks
    • Strong organization and communication skills with a high attention to detail
    • Ability to work well in a team environment
    • Ability to demonstrate initiative as a motivated "self-starter"
    • Previous working experience requiring a high-level of customer service 
    • Ability to design, implement and document configuration for all systems
    Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous experience in working with backend webserver services such as Microsoft IIS and Apache Tomcat
  • Previous experience working with enterprise firewalls and managing access rules
  • Previous experience working with project management on successful systems deployments
  • Previous experience working with enterprise-class storage area network (SAN) equipment
  • Previous experience administering Microsoft Exchange email services and/or M365
  • Previous experience administering enterprise backup solutions and/or deploying and testing disaster recovery initiatives for complex computing environments
  • Ability to troubleshoot hardware and software
