Job Description

The Department of English at Virginia Tech invites applications for full-time Instructors in the Composition Program beginning August 2021. These are one-year positions with the potential of renewal. We seek colleagues who value contemporary approaches to the teaching of writing, who are committed to active professional development in Rhetoric and Composition/Writing Studies, and who strive to create vibrant, innovative environments for practice-based teaching and learning. Instructors teach four first-year writing courses per semester; they are expected to participate in the program’s faculty development activities and to embrace the goals, curriculum, and teaching methods shared across a large-scale writing program. Instructors are not required to serve on committees or in advising, but they are welcome to do so voluntarily. Instructors are expected to honor Virginia Tech’s Principles of Community, to enact the program’s commitments to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and to work well with a diverse student population. Virginia Tech’s Composition Program provides instruction in ENGL1105: First-year Writing: Introduction to College Composition and ENGL1106: First-year Writing: Writing from Research to nearly 6,000 students each year.

Required Qualifications

Candidates must hold an M.A. or Ph.D. in Rhetoric and Composition/Writing Studies (or a terminal degree in a related field in English Studies, provided the program of study included graduate-level coursework in Rhetoric and Composition/Writing Studies) by August 2021; evidence of successful teaching; and a demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion, including experience working with diverse populations.
