The Whiting School of Engineering at Johns Hopkins University invites nominations and applications for the position of Director of the Malone Center for Engineering (MCEH). The Malone Center is one of the Whiting School’s 25 Interdisciplinary Centers and Institutes. Founded in 2016 with a $30M endowment gift, it drives a problem-focused research agenda that applies engineering approaches to improve the efficiency and efficacy of healthcare. The Malone Center Director will report to Ed Schlesinger, Benjamin T. Rome Dean of the Whiting School of Engineering and will have a scholarly record deserving appointment as tenured professor in the Whiting School (with a secondary appointment in the School of Medicine or another division of the University possible as appropriate).

The Director guides the overall strategic development of Malone Center programs and works with faculty across Hopkins to develop and grow efforts in the healthcare space. Beyond Hopkins, MCEH’s Director will foster connections with the healthcare industry as part of the Center’s efforts to expand its base of resources and relationships. Possible directions for the Center’s growth include data-science and computing-related areas such as AI in health; imaging; systems-engineering approaches to health-system optimization; human-centered design; and fundamental and applied work in informatics.

MCEH’s new Director will be a collaborative, entrepreneurial, and proven leader with a broad view of the opportunities at the intersection of engineering and healthcare who can engage and inspire faculty, staff, student, and partners in exciting new work. The Director will have the ability inclusively to develop a compelling vision to establish MCEH as the leading hub for research and discovery. They will have a track record of successful hiring across disciplinary boundaries and of bringing together researchers to do novel work. The Director will have a dossier that evinces a distinguished track record of scholarship and teaching, a passionate commitment to research, discovery, program-building, and application, and an interest in and success at academic administration. Fundraising experience is valued.

Expected educational background and qualifications:

  • An earned doctorate and a scholarly record deserving appointment as tenured professor at The Johns Hopkins University;
  • Recognized leadership in a relevant field with a distinguished national and international reputation for research and education;
  • Excellent communication skills in both internal and external interactions;
  • A strong commitment to diversity and inclusion at all levels among faculty, students, and staff, along with measurable and sustained impact on the diversity and inclusiveness of organizations they have led or been part of; and
  • Leadership experience within a complex research environment or in national/international organizations connected to their respective field.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
