About the Position:
The Office of Research and Sponsored Projects (ORSP) works with other units throughout campus to seek external support for faculty research, creative activity and institutional projects that support the educational and service mission of the university. ORSP staff assist with proposal development, proposal submission to external funding agencies, post award support, and help to assure that research and sponsored programs are conducted in accordance with the highest ethical and regulatory standards. We are seeking an exceptional individual to join our team as the Research Development Officer (Administrative Analyst/Specialist-Exempt I). The ideal candidate in this role should have a positive attitude and an active, energetic mind that is characterized by highly ethical practices and a commitment to diversity, openness, flexibility, integrity, and kindness.
This position requires a high level of faculty support throughout the proposal submission process and will play a centralized role in supporting the assigned college(s). Under general supervision, the Research Development Officer works collaboratively and in close coordination with all units in the Office of Research and Sponsored Projects, College Dean and Associate Dean(s), Department Chairs, college development teams, faculty and staff, and campus administrators to stimulate proposal-writing by facilitating the grantsmanship needs and skills of faculty and staff. Supports the Office of Research Development Initiatives aimed at increasing research and scholarship on campus. Identifies and disseminates funding opportunities to faculty and staff. Analyzes funding opportunities for eligibility and appropriateness based on faculty research interests and institutional needs. Maintains funding opportunity Master calendar including Limited Submissions. Coordinates all pre-proposal efforts through ORSP. Provides expert knowledge of the proposal development process within the designated college(s). Reviews and edits grant proposal narratives, as needed. Reviews and edits support required pre-award documents such as letters of support, bio sketches, and other related materials. Updates and maintains proposal boilerplate language and university data including distinctions, awards, major accomplishments, and statistics. Develops, edits and maintains promotional and branding materials for the Office of Research Development. Develops content for and facilitates trainings on grantsmanship and related topics. Participates in ORSP and College staff meetings. Works in a collegial and supportive manner with the Office of Grants and Contracts, the Office of Sponsored Programs, the University Advancement Office, the Director of Development for their designated college(s) as well as with Strategic Communications and Brand Management. Other duties as assigned.
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university and/or the equivalent training and administrative work experience involving the study, analysis, evaluation, development or improvement of administrative policies, procedures, practices or programs plus two years of related experience.
Working knowledge of and the ability to apply standard theories, principles, practices, and techniques applicable to the program or administrative specialty to develop conclusions and make recommendations. Thorough knowledge of policies, procedures, and outside regulations pertaining to the applicable program or administrative specialty. Working knowledge of operational and fiscal analysis and techniques. Ability to take initiative and plan, organize, coordinate, and perform work in various situations where numerous and diverse demands are involved. Skilled in research, development, and evaluation of policies and programs. Ability to collect, evaluate, and interpret data to develop sound conclusions and make appropriate recommendations. Expertise investigating and analyzing problems with broad administrative impact and implications. Ability to anticipate problems and address them proactively. Demonstrated ability to effectively interpret, organize, and present information and ideas in written or presentation form. Ability to train others on new skills and procedures and provide lead work direction.
A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily and is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.
Master’s degree or a doctorate degree from an accredited college or university or the equivalent work experience in a university or research institution. Previous work experience in the field of research development. Knowledge of policies and practices employed by institutions of higher education in preparing and managing research grants and contract activities. Experience in federal and private project and grants management. Strong grantsmanship skills with the ability to review, critique and edit grant proposals, as well as provide constructive feedback on proposal to faculty applicants. Knowledgeable of Pivot-RP to help identify and find external funding opportunities. Ability to manage concurrent priorities effectively and efficiently. Ability to work independently, collaboratively, and collegially in a culturally diverse environment. Ability to develop systems and processes to facilitate a high volume of successful proposal submissions and awards.
