Summary

The Department of Surgery - Office of Surgical Research is seeking an enthusiastic Senior Editor. The Senior Editor will focus on editing and generating research related content, assisting novice and experienced faculty in grant and manuscript writing, in addition to other research editing related projects. This position also completes ad-hoc data collection and editing projects from the Chair of the Department, Various Divisions and the Surgery Education Office.

Job Duties
  • Provides faculty with a comprehensive checklist for grant opportunities, which requires a synthesis of extensive and detailed information extracted from multiple government instruction documents.
  • Edits grant documents for meaning, form, clarity, grammar, word choice, and strict adherence to formatting requirements and page limitations.
  • Proactively reaches out to the investigator’s research team for timely submission of grant-related materials to meet institutional and sponsor deadlines.
  • Ensures that all materials meet established standards for appearance and content.
  • Obtains cost estimates and collaborates in the selection of illustrators and printers, and approves their work.
  • Writes and/or edits correspondence for the department chair, including letters of reference for faculty awards and promotions, external faculty evaluations, residency application letters, scholarship applications, and letters of support for funding opportunities.
  • Collaborates with faculty, post-docs, and students in preparing papers, chapters, presentations, and all other textual material.
  • Edits manuscripts, letters to the editor, and book chapters for clarity, grammar, word choice, and formatting for submission to publications.
  • Acts as liaison with publishers.
  • Edits and oversees production of departmental and patient newsletters.
  • Gathers information to aid and prepare writings and publications.
  • Proofreads manuscripts, book chapters, and department publications.
  • Seeks permissions for figures and photos as necessary.
  • Maintains database, tracks status of submitted materials through the aRVU and VICTTR databases.
  • Compiles publication metrics annually.
  • Completes ad-hoc data collection and editing projects from the Chair of the Department and the Surgery Education Office.
  • Edits patient education and other materials as needed by the divisions.
  • Updates department research web pages.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in English or related field.
  • Three years of relevant experience.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Scientific editing and research experience preferred
  • Excellent reading/writing skills with a background in medical writing.
  • Experience building business correspondence such as formal letter of support.
  • Experience with grant writing and the submission process.
