Job Summary

The University of Colorado Boulder School of Education is encouraging applications for a full-time Instructor in Science Education for the CUTeach Program. The CUTeach instructor will play a critical role in mentoring and preparing preservice teachers and facilitating strong partnerships with local schools and community organizations. They will also collaborate with faculty and staff in the School of Education around other teacher education efforts.

The CUTeach Program is housed in the University of Colorado Boulder School of Education. As a part of the School of Education, The CUTeach Program is committed to educational justice and humanizing STEM Education for historically minoritized groups of students. This means that we seek to design STEM learning environments that value the cultural and linguistic resources of historically minoritized groups and center their knowledge and experiences. It also means that the program emphasizes deep partnerships with practicing teachers, communities and school towards mutual growth and respect.

As a STEM-focused program, CUTeach represents a collaborative effort between the University of Colorado Boulder School of Education, the College of Arts and Sciences, and the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences. It offers licensure and certificate opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students, and has received national recognition as a STEM-focused teacher education program. Its graduates have been awarded competitive national fellowships. There is also a unique engineering pathway to science and math teacher licensure through an engineering major and the CUTeach Engineering Program.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

  • Teach up to four certification courses per semester (e.g., Inquiry Approaches to Teaching STEM, Problem-Based Science Instruction).
  • Coordinate and supervise field placements for courses with practicum components.
  • Collaborate with local area public school teachers to provide mentorship to teacher candidates, and conduct field observations in local schools.
  • Collaborate with other STEM Education program area faculty to support efforts to recruit and prepare preservice science and mathematics teachers.
  • Recruit and support preservice candidates from backgrounds historically underrepresented in science and mathematics teaching.
  • Carry out other programmatic tasks, (e.g., update program documents, represent the program to district and community partners).

This is a 9-Month position.

What We Can Offer

The salary range is $60,000 - $65,000 depending on experience.

What We Require

  • Master’s degree or higher in science education or in a field of science.
  • Minimum 5 years as a successful secondary science classroom teacher, with a preference for experience in public schools serving historically minoritized populations.
  • Experience and/or leadership in professional development and experience working with beginning teachers or equivalent, e.g., instructional coach or mentoring student teachers.
  • Regular participation in state, regional, or national professional organizations and activities.

  • Good collaborative and problem-solving skills.
  • Desire to work with pre-service undergraduate and graduate students.

  • Knowledge of local districts and Colorado educational context.
  • Interest in educational research and education evaluation studies.
  • Experience applying for and administering extramural funding.
  • Experience publishing reports, academic studies, and other community outreach.
