BASIC FUNCTION

Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, the Pool Maintenance Technician performs a range of semi-skilled to skilled swimming pool maintenance and repair duties for a complex aquatic system and building. This position maintains sanitary and safe pool conditions in accordance with departmental policies, Los Angeles County Health Department standards, and state safety regulations.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES

Performs semi-skilled to skilled pool maintenance. Monitors filters including running appropriate levels of acids through plastic tubing. Adjusts technology-controlled pool water levels and complex control valves as needed. Operates electronic pool monitoring devices and CO2 tank pumps for accurate chemical control. Operates UV devices and computerized panels to maintain appropriate humidity levels inside pool building to reduce corrosion. Stores and handles pool-related chemicals in compliance with regulatory safety standards.

Performs semi-skilled to skilled pool repair duties including changing belts, tires, or other basic components on pool vacuums, pumps, motors, filters, valve piping, tubing, and gauges. Troubleshoots and repairs chlorinators as needed. Removes and replaces electrical circulating pumps and motors as needed. Installs other special equipment as assigned. Operates a variety of hand and power tools.

Performs a variety of pool cleaning duties. Utilizes an automated pool cleaning machine to regularly brush and vacuum the pool. Acid washes, backwashes filters, cleans deck drains, pressure washes horizontal and vertical surfaces, hoses and disinfects surrounding decks and diving tower. Ensures that pool equipment and walkways are clean and safe to use at all times.

Maintains swimming pool water quality. Conducts daily inspections and tests pool water for balanced pH levels. Applies additive chemicals to attain regulatory standards for proper water clarity, purity, alkalinity, and oxidation levels. Maintains daily records of test results and equipment readings.

Serves as a point of contact for officials from the Los Angeles County Health Department and Fire Department during mandated pool inspections. Provides information upon request. Maintains up-to-date pool records for regulatory reviews.

Maintains up-to-date Los Angeles County Department of Public Health Swimming Pool Technician Certification. Stays current on all compliance and safety regulations related to large, public, aquatic facilities.

Informs supervisor when pool or equipment repairs are needed. Makes recommendations and coordinates servicing and/or purchases from outside vendors in consultation with supervisor.

Ensures pool facilities, buildings, and adjacent grounds are secured while working. Locks and unlocks doors and gates. Inspects pool and surrounding areas for vandalism and/or security-breaches. Reports safety and sanitary hazards to supervisor and/or other appropriate authorities as needed.

Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

High school diploma or equivalent.

Three (3) years of experience performing related duties for a large pool facility or public aquatic center.

Licenses or Other Requirements:

Must possess and maintain a Los Angeles County Department of Public Health Swimming Pool Technician Certification. Certification training can be provided during probationary period.

Must possess and maintain a valid First Aid and CPR Certification. Certification training can be provided during probationary period.

Must possess and maintain AED (Automated External Defibrillators) Certification. Certification training can be provided during probationary period.

Must possess and maintain a valid CA Driver's License.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge/Areas of Expertise:

Knowledge of principles and practices of swimming pool water chemistry and testing.

Knowledge of cleaning methods, materials, and equipment for a large pool complex.

Knowledge of applicable laws, codes, rules, and regulations related to aquatic complexes.

Knowledge of basic fire, safety, and security regulations for public aquatic facilities.

Knowledge of and/or experience working with CO2 pumps for chemical control in pool systems.

Knowledge of and/or experience servicing and maintaining UV devices for pool systems.

Knowledge of proper storage and handling of pool-related chemicals.

Abilities/Skills:

Skilled in basic principles and practices of plumbing and electricity.

Skilled in performing basic repairs to facilities and equipment.

Skilled at working with and understanding the theory behind a computerized pool system in coordination with pool maintenance/repairs so that the potential impact of adjustments and recalibrations are anticipated and managed in advance of implementation.

Ability to operate a computer to run reports and send/respond to emails.

Ability to understand and work with an automated control system.

Ability to swim 50 feet unassisted.

Ability to make basic mathematical and chemical calculations.

Ability to maintain large public buildings in safe, clean, and orderly condition.

Ability to keep detailed, technical records that are subject to regular audits and inspections.

Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others.

Ability to meet schedules and timelines.

Ability to plan and prioritize work in order to meet demanding facility-use schedules.

Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Ability to work independently with little direction.

Ability to decipher color charts.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Participation in the district Call-in program to perform special duties and respond to emergencies, which may include reporting to work.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Must be able to wear a properly fitted respirator over the face.

Must be available to work weekends occasionally and as needed.

Must be able to lift 50 pounds.

Indoor and outdoor working environment.

Pool environment which can be wet, cold, warm, or humid for extended periods of time.

Exposure to cleaning chemicals and related fumes.

Work involves working around machinery with moving parts.

Work involves bending at the waist, pushing, pulling, standing, carrying, twisting/turning.

Work requires climbing ladders, dexterity of hands/fingers.

Work requires standing and/or walking for extended periods of time.

SALARY : (Step A) $4,762 per month.

*Salary increases are granted on the first day of the month following each year of service, until step F is reached.

Employees contribute 7% of their earnings toward the Public Employees Retirement System (PERS).

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

This position is designated as a full-time, twelve-month classified. Excellent fringe benefits include eight 32-hour workweeks during the summer. Working hours will be Monday through Friday 5:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. with some evenings and weekends during peak outreach period.
